MELODALA

Melodala is a creative ipad and iphone app developed by Mark McEvoy and Gil Cang combining symmetrical drawing with musical soundscapes. Melodala functions with two drawing modes, 35 colours, 12 brushes, four choices of symmetry and 10 musical tracks. These all combine to enable the creation of unique cosmic doodles which can be kept as a screensaver, emailed or printed. The possibilities are infinite and each visual design is unique. Melodala was the first ipad app installation at the Tate Britain during the Loud@The Tate family event in August 2010. It has been featured in articles in the Evening Standard, Metro, Mail Online and live on Sky News TV in relation to the use of the ipad as an art tool.

Inspired by the ancient Mandala, a concentric diagram used by Tibetan Buddhist Monks as a creative form of meditation, healing and trance induction. Often constructed from sand, they are unique to Tibetan Buddhism and are believed to effect purification and healing. Monks construct Mandalas over a number of days or even weeks. When completed, the Mandala is consecrated, before being swept away and dispersed into flowing water to symbolize the impermanent nature of existence.
