This is my userpage for the Translating Wikipedia course at the University of Freiburg. AnTransit
WEEK | PROCESS | TIME | CHALLENGES |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Created my account, got instructed, made the first steps on Wikipedia and started translating a section from the article Hans Haustein (with Zoe) | 90 min in class, 90 min at home | After creating my account, I have tried to insert links. I had some struggles with links that didn't work, so I got an idea of how to handle these problems and how to find solutions for them. I moved on to adding images and did the same procedure there. I have learned to test different things. Even if you fail, you get to know new functions. |
2 | The teacher proofread the section and we published the article. Jordan and I started translating the last section of Hans Haustein in class and continued / finished the task at home. Furthermore, we created our own page on English Wikipedia for the German footballer Joelle Wedemeyer. Therefore, we have translated the German version, inserted links, images and references, and published the page after proofreading it. Later on, I have created this work schedule to get an overview of my work and to see the progress. | 90 min in class, 120 min at home | One of the biggest challenges was to learn and use the "English football language" and to find suitable synonyms for German Associations. I am still learning how to use my Wikipedia account and I am developing my skills. |
3 | Proofreading our latest translation (with Jordan), creating our second page Scottish Monastery Constance, translating the German version of this page. | 90 min in class, 50 min at home | We have tried to rename our page after finding a more suitable title. However, we did not manage to do that. Therefore we will have to delete the page and copy paste its HTML in the new one with the better title. Still some difficulties with the translation of German associations etc. |
4 | Working on our translation (with Jordan), publishing Scots Monastery Constance and Joelle Wedemeyer, choosing a suitable article for the next translation (with Zoe and Johanna), translating my part and creating a page. | 90 min in class, 120 min at home | I have struggled with the function of linking the translation to its original version. It is still difficult to handle the translation of German associations, honours, etc. |
5 | Linking Scots Monastery Constance and Joelle Wedemeyer to the German original, translating and proofreading Paul Luchtenberg with Zoe and Johanna, creating the categories and inserting links, checking references and publishing it | 90 min in class,
110 min at home |
I finally figured out how to create categories and link pages to their translation. |
6 | Last corrections on the Paul Luchtenberg translation with Johanna and Zoe, looking for a new translation topic, starting the translation of Holy Spirit (Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm) | 90 min in class, 60 min at home | Zoe and I were confronted with difficult vocabulary (architecture based section), sometimes words I don't even know in German. |
7 | Proofreading our translated sections of Holy Spirit (Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm), inserting links, images, references and categories, deleting the German version in our HTML (with Zoe). | 90 min in class,
40 min at home |
Surprislingly, there is only one category in the German article, which exists also in English. Still some words we didn't know but we searched for explanations and pictures to get an image. |
8 | Proofreading our Holy Spirit (Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm) one more time (together with Alison), searching for a suitable German article for our next translation, assigning tasks, starting to translate, preparing my presentation | 90 min in class, 150 min at home | It is difficult to find an article that is not too long and not too short. Some difficulties by translating German events and architectural vocabulary. |
