Chances are Alaska coach Tim Cone and his Aces didn't see this coming.
Two weeks ago the 10-6 Aces were comfortably ahead of their closest pursuer and in total control of their destiny.
And then they lost their magic and dropped two consecutive games against struggling Red Bull and Barangay Ginebra – something that caught many observers by surprise.
Suddenly Alaska's bid for an outright passage into the semifinals of the 2008-09 KFC PBA Philippine Cup is in jeopardy. Rain or Shine and Talk n Text are breathing down the Aces’ necks, just half a game behind at 10-7.
At best, Cone could only hope the five-day break in-between games enabled his troops to regain their bearings as they scramble for the crucial victory against the Air21 Express in their scheduled 5 o'clock encounter at the Ynares Center Friday afternoon.
The Alaska coach said the rematch is a big game for both teams, which always play with contrasting styles.
"It really comes down to who can control the tempo," Cone said.
Air21 dealt Alaska a 109-107 decision in their first encounter last Oct.29. But whether the 8-8 Express could repeat to enhance their chances of making the "Magic 5" depends on how they can adjust to Don Allado's presence and Ranidel de Ocampo's departure.
Air21 traded for Allado the other day in exchange for De Ocampo and Talk n Text’s first round pick in the 2012 Annual Draft.
"Our mentality towards that development, positive or otherwise, would be the key to winning," Perasol.
Red Bull and Coca-Cola also engage each other in a crucial match-up scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
The two teams are fighting for the ninth and last wild card spot.
The Tigers (6-11) are one game up on the Barakos (5-11) but the absence of injured big men Asi Taulava and Nic Belasco could spell disaster for Coca-Cola's campaign.
The Tigers defeated the Barakos in their first meeting, 97-92, but are coming off a 69-90 pounding from the Sta. Lucia Realtors last Sunday. In contrast, the Barakos have won their last two games convincingly against Alaska and Air21.
