Internet Central (also known as NetCentral from their Nominet UK registrar tag[1]) is an ISO27001 certified UK-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) headquartered in Keele, Staffordshire, England.
Internet Central provides internet connectivity, telephony, website hosting and I.T. security services to, predominantly, businesses. They developed a radio-based broadband system known as IC-air.
Internet Central is a member of the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE),[2] the Communication and Internet Services Adjudication Scheme (CISAS)[3] (an alternative dispute resolution scheme giving access to independent and speedy conflict resolution), and the Manchester Network Access Point (MaNAP) which in turn is a member of EuroIX (see List of Internet exchange points).
History
[edit]Founded 1995 in the town of Nantwich in Cheshire by Mark Simcoe, Internet Central was one of the first established Internet Service Providers in the UK and therefore has a very low autonomous system number of 6717.[4]
Acquired in 1997 by Goodwin PLC, Internet Central operates independently alongside other subsidiaries within the group.
With funding assistance from the European Community[5] a new science park was built at Keele University called Keele University Science & Business Park.[6] The first building on this site was named Innovation Centre and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999.[7] Internet Central relocated there in the same year.
Internet Central was given an individual 'non-PTO, with code powers' telecommunications licence in January 2001 by the DTI enabling them to build their own communications infrastructure independent from other licensed operators, and offer to their customers lower cost connectivity and resilient circuits from PoP's in Crewe, Hanley, Keele, Mow Cop, Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester.[8]
