Respiratory Drug Delivery is a melting pot of Pharmacology, Fluid Mechanics, respiratory physiology, anatomy and many other subjects. It is focused on the delivery of a drug through an aerosol to the Respiratory System. The "drugs" studied can be tobacco or environmental pollutants, but are typically medicines administered using a Metered Dose Inhaler, Dry Powder Inhaler, or a Nebulizer. The primary difference between these devices is in patient preference, not device performance.[1] Since 1895 significant progress has been made in increasing our understanding of respiratory drug delivery from a mystical awareness to a complex system of interacting physical phenomena which control the deposition of drugs on the lungs surface.[2]
The following is a picture of modern research that occurs on the subject of localized deposition.
