Julie Sahni
[edit]Julie Sahni is an Indian-American chef and cookbook author who introduced north Indian cooking to many Americans beginning in 1980 when her 560-page Classic Indian Cooking was published. She tested the recipes in the book for seven years before it was published.[1]

Early life and education in India
[edit]She was born October 16, 1945, to Padma and Venkataraman Ranganathan Iyer, the second of their four daughters. She learned to be a Bharatanatyam dancer and traveled world wide to perform.[2][3]

[edit]In 1968, Sahni immigrated to the United States to attend Columbia University for her graduate degree in urban planning.[4]

Personal life
[edit]She was married to Viraht Sahni, a physicist, and they had a son, Vishal Raj, in November 1979. They divorced after the publication of Classic Indian Cooking.[5]
