[edit]Esau is the progenitor of the Edomites and the elder twin brother of Jacob, the patriarch of the Israelites.[8] Esau and Jacob were the sons of Isaac and Rebekah, and the grandsons of Abraham and Sarah. Of the twins, Esau was the first to be born with Jacob following, holding his heel (the Hebrew name Yaacov meaning "Heel-holder"). Isaac was sixty years old and Rebekah is believed to have been younger when the boys were born. The grandfather Abraham was still alive, being 160 years old at that time.

The twins' birth foreshadows the turbulent events which would unfold between them, including the trade of Esau's birthright and the subversion of Isaac's blessing.[1] Isaac was sixty years old and Rebekah is believed to have been younger when the boys were born. The grandfather, Abraham, was still alive, being 160 years old at that time.

[edit]Foreshadowing
[edit]From birth, Esau's downfall at his brother's hand is foreshadowed. Genesis 25:22-23 states that the brothers struggled with each other within the womb and that Rebekah asks why this is happening to her. The Lord replied saying, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger." The Lord's reply clearly states that one brother will end up usurping the other and assures the reader that the relationship between the brothers will be largely hostile. In Genesis 25:25-26, Esau was born the eldest and was pursued immediately by Jacob, who was holding on to Esau's heel as if trying to prevent Esau from being the firstborn. At the time, grasping at one's heel was seen as a figure of speech meaning "to deceive." This foreshadows the turbulent relationship between the brothers and purports that Jacob would later be the downfall of Esau through the extortion of his birthright and the theft of their father's blessing.[1]
