Early life and education
[edit]Hummel Richmond, Virginia, the son of Elizabeth (née Harrison) and Burt Hummel. He has a twin, Augustus (Gus) Hummel. From an early age he was drawing on anything and everywhere he could, even the walls of his house. At first his parents were furious, until the realized that they weren’t that bad. When he was only three, Kurt was placed in his first art class. It was there he flourished, doing things that kids three times his age wish they could do. For years he took classes in every form of art he could. It wasn’t until he was eleven that he found fashion. He had gone to a fashion show downtown and fell in love.
Due to bullying at his high school, Hummel graduated early and was accepted into Fashion Institute of Technology at the age of seventeen. His first semester was rocky but after a lucky design that was noticed by Zac Posen, Hummel's reputation started to grow. He interned with Betsey Johnson and had an outfit walk during her Fashion Week spring show.
Career
[edit]Project Runway
[edit]Hummel was convinced by a professor to try out for Project Runway at the age of 21. He was shocked when he was actually chosen for the show. He was in the bottom for the first two challenges and was a favorite to leave early. The third challenge of the show, the designers were given two days to make a wedding dress that would be in Elle magazine. Hummel not only won the challenge, but was asked by Nina Garcia if she could put the dress on the cover. From there he made the top three every week but once, winning two other challenges and $10,000. His runway show for fashion week was one of the best received in history. Hummel sold several items off of the models and was asked by Heidi Klum to design an outfit for her birthday party. He has been back to guest judge the show every season since.
Early Career (2009-2011)
[edit]Immediately following the show, Hummel worked hard on his reputation. He designed for many Hollywood actresses including Kiera Knightly, Michelle Williams, Olivia Wilde and Reese Witherspoon. His show for his Fall 2010 collection was called by Vogue "The best collection from a young designer since Coco herself." His designs became more and more in demand and he opened a studio New York to accommodate. He stayed successful, snagging the cover of Vogue and W four times in a hear and a half.
2012-Present
[edit]Hummel moved to Los Angeles, California in spring 2012. He stated in an interview "Most of my work is in Hollywood and I'm tired of planes." He now has a large studio that he often sees clients in. He has a flagship store on Rodeo Drive that he is often known to stop by at. In October of 2012, Hummel was hired by E! News to be their fashion commentator for Fashion Police. His commentary was so loved by the network and viewers that he was given a once a week segment where he talks about the weeks fashion choices. He was one of the networks interviewers for the 2013 Academy Awards and presented the award for Best Costumes during the show. Hummel recently stated in an interview that he was in talks to design the 2013 outfits for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.
