Biography
[edit]Early Life
[edit]Born on September 15, 1862 in a small town in Bavaria. She was the second oldest of 5 children with her family making a living off the railway. Prior to the death of her mother when she was 12 she attended a monastic school in Sigmaringen. When her mother died she began to live with her aunt. Laura returned to her studies completing a French Education program, going on to teach at an Arts Education School. Having a passion for discovery coupled with her keen intellect [1] she studied on her own and learned ancient languages, while deepening her philosophical works.
After her older sister's marriage Laura continued with her philosophical studies and took charge of the household management for the sake of her father and her three younger siblings. However, a nervous breakdown due to the stress of her studies and managing the household resulted in a long-lasting nervous crisis. Fortunately for her with the assistance of her older female friend Laura could manage her crisis.
Education
[edit]Through her network of friends, Laura met a young student who encouraged her to pursue study in Zurich. She began her studies in 1898 choosing to study ethnology, but quickly switched to the department for the natural sciences at the Swiss Polytechnic school, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. In 1901, Laura graduated with a distinction.[1]
Academic Career
[edit]Promoted in 1903 she became an assistant at ETH Zurich to Ulrich Grubenmann who helped her broaden her knowledge and reach in the scientific community. In July 1909 she began the habilitation process[1] and by October of the same year her request had been approved and her post-doctoral studies began with a position as a private lecturer at the Department of Natural Sciences[1] becoming the first female lecturer at ETH Zurich[2]. In 1909 Grubenmann helped her to gain a promotion, making her a professor at the universities of ETH Zurich and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. She remained at both universities as a scientific assistant to Grubenmann.[1]
