Introduction Dr. Kris M. Belland, an Osteopathic physician, is the President of the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine (AOCOPM) and currently the President and CEO of the Aerospace Medical Strategic Consultation, PLLC. He recently served as the FAA Southwest Regional Deputy Flight Surgeon. Prior to that, he was an Aeromedical consultant to Pilot and Flight Attendant Unions, Corporate and Chief Medical Officer for American Airlines, and completed a full 30+ year career in the US Navy (USN). He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and board certified in Family and Aerospace Medicine with master’s degrees in Business Administration, Public Health, and Strategic Studies.
Military Career Dr. Belland's distinguished military career spans over three decades in the US Navy, where he served as both a flight surgeon and pilot. He accrued over 2,000 flight hours, 112 arrested landings, and flew 25 combat missions in aircraft such as the F/A-18 Hornet, A-6 Intruder, EA-6B Prowler, and F-14 Tomcat. Professional Experience Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Dr. Belland served as the FAA Southwest Regional Deputy Flight Surgeon, overseeing medical programs in Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. He was integral to airman medical certification, air traffic control specialist medical qualification policy, and aviation industry drug and alcohol testing programs. He also played a significant role in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and AsMA's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
American Airlines As the Corporate Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer for American Airlines, Dr. Belland was medically responsible for over 130,000 employees, including 30,000 flight attendants and 15,000 pilots. He managed 12 medical clinics across the nation, ensuring quality healthcare for American Airlines pilots, flight crew, team members, and passengers. His responsibilities included handling medical issues related to emerging infectious diseases and coordinating with multiple international and national health organizations.
