Frans Lanting

Frans Lanting (born 1951, Rotterdam, Netherlands) is a Dutch photographer and is considered to be one of the greatest photographers of the natural world. He is mainly known for his photography on National Geographic. His photography has been published in magazines such as National Geographic, Life, Audubon, Stern, and Outdoor Photographer.

Early Life and Education

In Lanting's early life, he was an author, speaker, creator of images that inspire people to learn about our planet. He also is a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). He received his master's degree in Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He then moved to the United States to persue an environmental planning degree.

Work

In Lanting's early work it is evident that he traveled to many different parts of the world. In one instance, he did some work in Madagascar, Africa in which he captured wildlife and tribal traditions that had never been seen before.

More recently, Lanting's word is often shown in National Geographic as he is a photographer-in-residence. His work is also in the LIFE Project (2006) as it was launched as a book, exhibition, and a multimedia symphony with music by Phillip Glass. As of 2005, Lanting published his work, Jungles, in the Field Museum of Natural History. The main focus for this was based in the rainforest which led to animals and plants being showcased.

Lanting also created "A Journey Through Time" as a lyrical interpretation of the history of life from the Big Bang Theory to the present that took place in May to July 2012. This was a 75 photo exhibition in the harbor of Rotterdam.
