Two-field system — an alternating form of cultivation of two fields. One field was sown with spring or winter cereals and the other was left fallow to prevent excessive soil depletion. In the following year, the previously fallowed field was cultivated. The two-field system developed as a consequence of the incandescent system.[1][2] This method was also known since Antiquity.[3] Since the 19th century, scholars of agricultural history have tended to regard the two-field system as archaic, which preceded the more progressive three-field system and was eventually replaced by it. However, research shows that in the same countries, the concept of the double-field was widely used alongside the triple-field.[4]
