Living World Characters

Don Kanonji

• Voiced by: Shigeru Chiba (Japanese); Michael Sorich (English)

Don Kanonji is a popular spirit medium who has a television show called Ghost Bust that, at the time of his introduction, is watched by 25% of Japan's population. He later formed the Karakura Superheroes, which consists of the Kurosaki sisters and the children at the Urahara Shop, to get the show's declining ratings up. The method in which Don Kanonji used to rid ghosts, thinking he was sending spirits to heaven, actually quickly caused those spirits to become hollows (he would take his cane and forcibly rip open the holes in spirits that hadn't fully changed into hollows yet). He found this out when he and Ichigo Kurosaki fought a hollow that appeared because of Don Kanonji during a television taping at Karakura Town. His special attack is "Golden Kanonball," a tiny ball of golden light that moves slowly and explodes with surprising power. He speaks in a mixture of Japanese and English. His trademark pose is to cross both arms over his chest and laugh boisterously and deeply. His most famous sentence is Smells Like Bad Spirit!, that is a tribute to Smells Like Teen Spirit, one of Nirvana's songs.

Yuichi Shibata

A supposedly cursed "parakeet" (actually a cockatiel) that found its way into Chad's protection, Yuichi is actually the ghost of a young boy tormented by a vicious hollow. He is guided into Soul Society by Ichigo and eventually meets up with Chad again.

Oscar Joaquin de la Rosa

• Voiced by: Tadashi Hirose (Japanese); Kim Strauss (English)

Often referred to as Abuelo, (Spanish for grandfather), he is Yasutora Sado's adopted grandfather, living in Mexico. He teaches Chad to be gentle and not use his physical strength to hurt and intimidate people. Chad honors his memory by protecting a Mexican coin given by De la Rosa with his life.

Midoriko Tono

Midoriko is Yuzu and Karin's friend and schoolmate who has seen Ichigo while possessed by Kon's spirit. She is frequently threatened by Karin into forcing herself to believe she has seen nothing out of the ordinary whenever something strange happens, especially when it involves Ichigo. According to her diary entries found during the sketches of volume 14, Midoriko is also usually blamed for Karin's carelessness (such as forgetting to water the class' chrysanthemums) and also has a crush on Keigo Asano.

Sora Inoue

Sora is Orihime Inoue's older brother. He raised her for most of her life, and died in the Kurosaki Clinic from wounds suffered in a car accident three years before the series begins. He enters the story quickly as a hollow, Acidwire. In the anime, he is seen dragged to Hueco Mundo to be turned into a hollow at the behest of Grand Fisher. This is not shown or even suggested in the manga; one can assume that his feelings of being forgotten by Orihime were what prompted his transformation in this case. His name is Kakei in the official English-language manga translation, but he is still called Sora in the character popularity polls.

Curiously, before being purified by Ichigo, Sora was able to remove his hollow mask and recover his original personality. While such an act has been described as the process which creates an arrancar, Sora remains in hollow form, albeit with a human head. Presumably, this is because of Sora resisting his hollow self, rather than the hollow itself removing the mask.

Yama, Mit, and Toshi

Yama, Mit, and Toshi are three skateboarders who briefly appear in the first chapter and are beaten up by Ichigo for breaking a bottle with flowers that he put as a memorial for a ghost. In the English translation, they are referred to by one member as "Li'l Yama," "Li'l Mitch," and "Li'l Toshi" respectively.

Shigeo and Harutoki

Shigeo and Harutoki are two friends of Chad. Shigeo lives on the money he makes from his part time job and is easily upset when he does not get to eat.

Raku

a.k.a. Karakura Lion Jet

Raku (named "Cammy" in the English version, as raku means "camel") is the spirit of a cat that Yuzu Kurosaki once fed. In its attempt to follow Yuzu home, it was killed by a passing car. It returns sometime later as a spirit of itself with unusually high spiritual power, attracting hollows. When the hollows endanger Yuzu, it transforms into a lion to protect her. Don Kanonji, who organized the Karakura Superheroes in response to the hollows it was attracting, dubs it the "Karakura Lion Jet" upon first seeing it. He also claims it as the team's "hero mecha" (a common staple in Super Sentai-styled anime), despite it not being mechanical. Transformed, Raku exhibits impressive speed and can surround itself in flame. After the hollow is defeated, Raku, having fulfilled its purpose, passes on. Nobody other than Yuzu knows that Raku is actually the "lion jet". Yuzu and Karin compare Raku to their brother, Ichigo.

Ganryu

• Voiced by: Masashi Ebara

Ganryu is the leader of the "Dark Ones" in Bleach: Memories of Nobody. In the film, he tries to use a shinigami named Senna to disrupt the balance between the worlds, collapsing both.

Zennosuke Kurumadani

Zennosuke (born June 25) is a shinigami assigned to replace Rukia in Karakura after her arrest. It is not known what division of the Gotei 13 he is a part of. To his chagrin, he has little to do while in Karakura, since either the Karakura Superheroes or Ichigo tend to destroy the few hollows that attack. He is confused by the fact that so many people in the town are capable of seeing him. He has an afro hair style, which results in Keigo Asano nicknaming him "Afro Old Man" (Afro-oji-san).

In one of the omake chapters, he calls Soul Society to complain about his working conditions, but is merely brushed off and told not to interfere with Ichigo (this upsets him, as he believes he is "elite"). He also complains that he wasn't informed about the happenings in the Soul Society as there was much chaos.

Zennosuke's zanpakutō is Tsuchinamazu (土鯰, lit. Soil Catfish) and is activated by the phrase "good morning" (おはよう, O-hayō), which is revealed by Bleach Advance: Kurenai ni Somaru Soul Society. Its abilities are unknown, but it takes the form of a chakram, a circle-round blade with a wooden handle. A purple ribbon is also attached to it.

Kanisawa and Aoga

Kanisawa and Aoga are two students who were in the same year as Shūhei Hisagi when studying in the Shinigami Academy. They were killed by huge hollows that showed up during a training session which they acted as facilitators. Aoga is a large male and Kanisawa is a female.

Rantao

• Voiced by: Masako Katsuki

Introduced in the anime's Bount arc, Rantao was the leader of the research team that created the Bount race. She looks exactly like Yoshino Sōma with the exception of a pair of glasses and her hair up (similar to Nanao Ise). The two also share the same voice. Rantao has stated that she is much older than she looks and has found a way to stay young in appearance, but needs to take very long naps to maintain her image. Out of guilt for creating the Bounts by accident, Rantao took pity on them and helped them build a sanctuary in which all Bounts could live, since they were being persecuted at the time by normal people. She convinced the Bounts to allow her to get them protection from Soul Society. Upon returning to Seireitei, she was immediately arrested and put on trial by Center 46 for her failed soul experiments. When the order was given to exterminate the Bounts because they were considered a threat, Rantao slipped outside to the real world to help them escape, one of the escapees being Jin Kariya. She also gave him "Messer", his doll. Shortly afterwards she was caught and had her shinigami powers sealed, before being exiled from Seireitei. Rantao went into hiding in an underground shelter in Rukongai, where she remains to this day. She spends her time engaging in minor experiments to utilize spiritual energy in better ways, one of which is a kidō shotgun which she uses on Jin Kariya during their confrontation.

Baishin

• Voiced by: Jōji Nakata

Unique to the Sword of Frenzy OVA, Baishin was once a member of the Gotei 13, but went mad and killed 63 seated officers before escaping to the human world. Six of the thirteen captains chased him and it took the sacrifice of two of them to seal him away. He eventually broke free and hunted down those with powerful spiritual energy. Baishin found it in Ichigo, sucking out power from him. However, Tōshirō Hitsugaya's interference forced him to flee. At the site where he was once sealed, Baishin once again fought Ichigo, this time with Rukia and Renji at Ichigo's side. However, by sucking out Ichigo's spiritual power, Baishin was able to perform his final release, becoming a living being of swords. He was eventually killed by Ichigo using his own final release, leaving only the zanpakutō Baishin had become one with. His goal was to separate his body, and his zanpakutō, even if he perished.

Senna

• Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō

Unique to Bleach: Memories of Nobody, Senna is an unusual young woman who encounters Ichigo and Rukia in the human world. She wears a standard unseated shinigami uniform, except for a large red ribbon tied around her waist. Her zanpakutō, named Mirokumaru (弥勒丸, lit. Maitreya circle), takes the form of a spear during its initial release and creates controllable tornadoes.

Eikichiro Saido

Unique to the anime, Eikichirō is two years Rukia's senior and a low or mid-level shinigami (supported by the fact that he never activates his zanpakutō) in service with the special forces. He finds himself pressed into service assisting Rukia and Ichigo against the hollow Grand Fisher. After being wounded by Grand Fisher, he fell asleep to heal himself. Upon waking up, he abandoned his mission to bring Rukia back to the Soul Society, having come to appreciate her reasons for staying on Earth.

Gate Watchers

The Gate Watchers are giants (each is over 30 feet tall) that guard the four gates into Sereitei. They are elites of Soul Society, although not as strong as a captain or lieutenant.

Jidanbō

The only gate guard to receive any significant attention, Jidanbō (born January 10) has a good heart and believes in honor. He believes all fights must be one on one (much like the 11th Division mindset) and defeat means he must open his gate, even to an enemy. When he attempts to do so for Ichigo, he is repelled by Gin Ichimaru. He is the first person that Ichigo fought in Soul Society, and following his honorable defeat and being healed by Orihime, became friends with Ichigo and company. He has immense physical power and wields two gigantic axes, which Ichigo destroys during their battle. He assists Kūkaku Shiba against Aizen late in the Soul Society arc.

Kaiwan

Danzōmaru

Bikonyūdō

• (South Gate - Shūwaimon)

These three guards are on Aizen's side, although it is unknown if it is through their own choice, Aizen's manipulation, or if they are under the control of Aizen through some spell. In the anime, their betrayal was not shown, but during the Bounts' infiltration of Seireitei, the south gate guardian can be seen at his post.

Members of Noble Houses

Kukaku Shiba

Kūkaku (Born October 1) is an ill-tempered fireworks expert who is particularly known for her ridiculously themed houses. Like Orihime Inoue and Rangiku Matsumoto, she has rather large breasts. She wears a prosthetic right arm in the anime, which is at odds with her scenes in the manga, where she is illustrated with just a stump. She assists Ichigo and company by launching them via a special cannon so they can enter Sereitei. Kūkaku is part of the former noble clan Shiba. A hollow fused with her brother Kaien, which forced Rukia Kuchiki to kill him. She does not seem to be a shinigami, but she knows high level kidō, and she carries a short-bladed sword on her back.

Ganju Shiba

An outrageous figure, Ganju wears a vest, scarf, bandana, and pair of goggles. He is often found with his gang, who all ride large boars. Ganju's boar is named Bonnie (affectionately referred to as Bonnie-chan). The omake sketch after episode 114 implies that Bonnie was accidentally cooked into a stew by Retsu Unohana during a friendly cookout including her, Ganju, and a few others from the 4th Division. Similar sketches have occurred in the series, but Bonnie is always shown alive and well by the next episode.

Ganju possesses a deep hatred for shinigami, a hot temper, and a strong ego. Though he always acts tough, he has shown that he also has a softer side, and is easily cowed by his older sister Kūkaku. The fact that he is not particularly attractive is a running joke in the series, and rather than deny this fact he tends to talk around the subject, especially when Yumichika Ayasegawa makes note of it.

Hisana Kuchiki

Hisana was Byakuya's wife who died of a disease fifty years before the main storyline. As she was a commoner, Byakuya was prohibited from marrying her, but did so out of love, thus disobeying the rules of the Kuchiki noble house. She was the older sister of Rukia Kuchiki in their past lives, and both were sent to Inuzuri (a poor district of Rukongai) where Hisana abandoned Rukia, unable to support both herself and Rukia. Hisana later greatly regretted this decision, even in her final moments, and as a result Byakuya adopted Rukia as his sister, in accordance with Hisana's dying wish, disobeying the rules a second time. She and Rukia are very similar in appearance.
