Smize

'Smize' is a portmanteau of the words 'smiling' and 'eyes' and denotes the act of 'smiling with one's eyes'^[1]. This is a skill taught to models to appear attractive and engaged without physically smiling, to produce better photographs^[2]. Smizing involves squinting the eyes and lowering the eyebrows.

Origins

The term 'smize' was first coined by supermodel Tyra Banks during the thirteenth season of America's Next Top Model^[3]. It was developed in order to enhance photos of supermodels and Banks claims it is her secret to delivering a stunning photo^[4].

In Popular Culture

In addition to usage on the show, Banks has also instructed others on how to smize during promotional interviews^[5], most notably Larry King. ^[6] Another notable figure that has used the smize is German-Filipino model Pia Wurtzbach. During Miss Universe 2015, Wurtzbach 'smized' which Banks complimented her later on Twitter. ^[7]
