About me

Hello, My name is Kiara! This is my first quarter at EVCC and I'm pursuing nursing. I'm an outgoing individual who enjoys being outside. Some of my hobbies include going hiking, going to the gym, going on road trips, and playing with my dog. As for my career goals, I want to be a travel nurse. It combines two things I'm passionate about- taking care of people and traveling. I would like to specialize in either NICU or pediatric oncology. In the NICU, I would help take care of babies who are in intensive care. I was born at 27 weeks, but was only 24 weeks developed, which resulted in having to be in the NICU for 4 months. That is known as being extremely preterm because being extremely preterm is any infant born 28+ weeks early. That has inspired me to want to help other babies and families that are going through a similar situation. 1 out of every 10 babies is born premature and most prenatal babies have to spend time in the NICU. In pediatric oncology, I would take care of children who have been diagnosed with cancer. Both specialties would be difficult, but rewarding.

My Wikipedia Activities

As a lover of learning, I will mainly be using Wikipedia to learn about a range of different topics and will hopefully be able to contribute to editing pages as well. In the future, I would be able to write or edit pages on a variety of medical topics. One of my interests is in medical research and I would love the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences.

Article Evaluation

When it comes to being a consumer, I’ve developed a fondness for buying locally. It makes me feel good knowing that I’m supporting small, locally-owned businesses instead of major corporations. I’ve also noticed the quality of products tends to be of higher quality. Farmers’ markets make it convenient to buy locally whether you want produce, knick-knacks, or to eat at a food truck. I visited the Farmers’ Market article on Wikipedia and found three aspects worth commenting on:  is anything left out of the article that should be there, is the article up to date, and are the citations as current as possible.

The Farmers’ Market article was intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history and how farmers’ markets are experienced in different countries. There was one drawback which was it left out that farmers’ markets don’t just sell produce and meat. They also sell locally made goods. In the article, they stated, “farmers' markets may be indoors or outdoors and typically consist of booths, tables or stands where farmers sell their produce, live animals, plants, and sometimes prepared foods and beverages”. In the article, they have sections for product categories, produce, and dairy, but nowhere in the article does it talk about the locally produced goods that are also sold at farmers’ markets. Products such as soap, dog treats, jewelry, etc. I understand that farmers’ markets used to be made up of fruit, meat, plants, and vegetable stalls but farmers’ markets have evolved into selling all sorts of local products.

An up-to-date article with correct information is very important because readers want to read something reliable. This article was last updated on April 26, 2021, which is extremely recent. This is a pro because it means that people are consistent with keeping this article up-to-date.

The Farmer’s Market article has many citations and references. There is a total of 53 different citations. These citations do range from 2002-2021 from when they were originally written, and a majority were from before 2017. When you are on this Wikipedia article, you can see a template message regarding sections needing additional citations for verification. This article could use an update on citations to give readers the best reliable source of information possible. It is important to use updated citation so you are using updated information.

Wikipedia is looked at as a very reliable database of information. To live up to this standard, Wikipedia articles need to be consistently updated with correct information and valid citations. Looking at the Farmers’ Market article, although it is being constantly updated, editors could do a more superior job at not leaving information out and choosing more up-to-date citations. This has taught me that when editing a Wikipedia article to look at it from a reader’s perspective and ask myself, “if I was the reader, would this be a genuine and informative article?” A Wikipedia article should be easy to understand with correct and informative facts and reliable, up-to-date citations.
