User:Khozinskii/Unique restoration of the unique monument of the Great Victory
2020 is the year of the 75 anniversary of the great Victory of the Soviet people in the war against German fascism. Preparation for the celebration of this anniversary included the restoration of the monuments, dedicated to the heroism and victims of the victorious people. Especially grandiose in its scope and complexity was the restoration of the monument located in Volgograd "Motherland calls!", symbolizing our native land, which raises and leads all its sons and daughters into battle with the enemy. The monument "Motherland calls!" was built for 8 years and was opened in October 1967, its authors are the sculptor E. V. Vuchetich and engineer N. V. Nikitin. The sculpture is 87 meters high and weighs more than 8000 tons. This is a technically complex structure, made of concrete, reinforced with metal ropes stretched inside the hull. Despite the strength and reliability of the sculpture, over the years numerous cracks formed on its surface, the total length of which was 14 kilometers, and it was also necessary to replace the internal ropes holding the monument, clean and repair its surface. The restoration, which began in 2017, was completed in a relatively short time. Quality of the work, even in winter, was ensured with the use of high technologies and modern materials. During the restoration of the statue, a 51-meter-high steel scaffolding was erected around it, and, after the work was completed, it was dismantled. A special cleaning technology, using low-abrasiveness products, made it possible to clean the surfaces of the statue without any damage. All the cracks on the statue were cleaned and filled with a special compound. The final work was polishing and covering the surface of the monument with a protective layer. The restoration works, dedicated to the anniversary of the great Victory, were completed on time. However, in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Grand opening of the restored monument "Motherland calls!" took place only on June 24, 2020.
