Let us join hands with KHANDAN to save KHANDAN Background: Islam enjoins preserving human life and protecting it against all potential harm, affliction and hardship, and it insists on ensuring peace and security for human beings. In the Quran, Allah says, "To save one life is to save all humanity". Islamic law urges every Muslim to be in constant support of his community, and make it a legal requirement in many cases. According to a Hadith (saying by the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him)),"He who relieves a believer of one form of distress, in this life shall be relieved by God of a greater distress on the Day of Resurrection" and "God will help any servant of His, as long as he continues to help his brother". With all this as common interest Khandan BDO (Khandan blood donor organization) started on 04-01-2004 with the coordination and sacrifice of 13 young energetic self esteemed persons. They shared their Blood Groups and contacts. It was a difficult task to mobilize people for Emergency; as the word itself creates mystery in minds but the courageous and loyal volunteers of Khandan BDWO took on an initiative to mobilize the people for dealing with the emergency.

This gave a fruitful result to the organization in the past seven years by having more than Fifteen Hundred (1500) registered Blood Donors and thousands of Blood Transfusions to the needy / dying Brothers and sisters for bringing them back to normal healthy life. The organization mobilized the young and energetic people from Mansehra city and it’s out skirts and gathered over 12000 Blood Donors. The efforts carried out by the KHANDAN BDWO during the major Natural calamity of EQ; 2005 were accredited by people and society from every walk of life.

During the EQ; 05 KHANDAN BDWO not only carried out Blood Donation Camps but also established a Tent Village equipped with every facility, provided Free Medicines and Life Saving Drugs to the District Head Quarter Hospital Mansehra, distributed Food and other necessities amongst the patients in the hospital and also to the staff of DHQ Mansehra which were working day and night in taking care of the patients.

And all these efforts are being carried out on self donations and donations from collections at several spots of the city and from the philanthropists

AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF KHANDAN BDWO: Provision of free Blood Transfusions to all needy irrespective of their Race, Religion or cast. Provision of Free Blood in a disaster and emergency. Providing of Medical Facilities to all needy. Provision of Funeral Services in case of Natural calamity and Death Toll. Providing Transportation (Ambulance) services from disaster area to the hospital. Providing Shelter, Food and Health facilities to all needy in case of an emergency. Provision of Rash on / Food to the widows, orphans and other vulnerable of the society. Providing Dowry and other necessities to the vulnerable families for the respectable marriage of their girls. Helping poor and orphaned kids to carry out their Education by providing Clothing’s i.e. school uniform, books and copies. Providing Free Medicines and Ambulance services to the needy persons.

PROCEDURE OF FUNCTIONING: Incase of any Emergency the volunteers of the Khandan BDWO leaves all their works / jobs and attends the serious patients till he / she / they are discharged from the hospital.

The Khandan Blood Donor Welfare organization performs its functioning in following manner Contents [hide] 1 BLOOD TRANSFUSION: 2 HELPING THE VULNERABLE 3 COLLECTION OF DONATIONS: 4 ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE Khandan BDWO: [edit]BLOOD TRANSFUSION: Blood Transfusion is essential to save a Human Life whenever there is a trauma / injury / hemorrhage and it can happen to any individuals or to a mass as result of an accident or natural calamity / disaster / terrorist attack. The organization has contact information of more than 1500 registered volunteers who can donate their Blood in case of any emergency on just one call. The organization bears all the expenses of Blood Typing, Testing (HIV, Hepatitis etc) collection and transfusion. The expenses for bringing in or taking back the patients / Donors from their respective places to the hospital, Juices and other relevant are also borne by the organization.

EARTHQUAKE; 2005 EFFORTS:

On October 8; 2005 a devastating Earthquake of 7.5 magnitude jolted district Mansehra which is the biggest ever natural calamity in the area resulting in huge Life losses, disability and left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. When whole of the world was busy with their work / routine, the sympathetic and brave hard workers / volunteers of the organization who considers Life as “LIFE FOR OTHERS” started their Emergency Relief operations. During first hour volunteers like Mr. Nazim (VP) and Mr. Sajid (I/C Al-Hamza Lab Mansehra) provided B (-ive) a unique Blood group to an unknown dying woman. At the same time when earth was jolting at its most the Chairman of KHANDAN BDWO Mr. Ayaz Khalid entered the DHQ hospital along with other volunteers. Panic was prevailing in the hospital premises; 1-2 day old operated patients were being shifted to open space, verandas and lobbies to create space for coming badly wounded patients. From that moment to the close of emergency relief phase the KHANDAN BDWO was prominent in all the major activities. They performed different tasks and many small bits for the relief of patients and other affected like Shifting of patients to the safer places and creating space for other patients with the help and coordination of DHQ hospital staff. Collection of donations from the local people / businessmen by spreading their shawls and placing tubs at various places in Mansehra city. KHANDAN BDWO along with Al-Hamza Lab and DHQ Blood Bank staff established a Blood Donation / Collection camp which functioned for more than a week and collected over 983 bottles of Blood. The volunteers of an Internationally renowned Trust the EDHI WELAFRE TRUST participates / collaborates in KHANDAN BDWO efforts from time to time and provides their Ambulances on just one call without delay. Emotions were on a high as this calamity has happened to their own Khandan’s, the volunteers brought tents / shamianas for creating shelter / space for patients in 05 vehicles. To widen the working area and to accommodate the maximum no. of patients the wall between the DHQ hospital and adjacent Zafar ground was broken by the KHANDAN BDWO volunteers and they pitched tents there for patients. After 2 hours of the EQ a well known trader from Mansehra namely Mr. Latif Bhai provided one vehicle to KHANDAN BDWO full of Mineral water, Milk and Juices for patients. 70 volunteers of KHANDAN BDWO distributed these amongst the patients. Twelve deghs were also cooked from the donations during the same time, out of which 5 were provided by Saibaan organization for the patients and staff of the hospital. Rest of the donations was used for the procurement of Emergency Life Saving Drugs to be used in the DHQ hospital. As time was passing by the situation was getting worse then before Khandan BDWO and Saibaan joined hands together as both were humanitarian and non-political. Rain and storm destroyed all the temporary shelters in the evening and the patients were all in open, they were then shifted by the volunteers to near by Abasein College and Irfan Neuro Hospital. 90 volunteers under the supervision of Mr. Qasim went to Balakot on the second day along with necessary equipment for search and rescue operation. Two known businessmen of Mansehra provide 0.175 Million rupees for the purchase of medicines as the previous day stock of medicines was finished at the hospital. Every soul was demised at that time due to loss of their families (Mothers, Sisters, Kids etc) their houses or injuries. The next step was to console these souls. xv. For this purpose KHANDAN BDWO took an initiative and established a Tent village comprising of 190 tents in the premises fo Zafar ground and provide them with all the facilities from Energy Savers, Generators, Water Tanks, Washrooms, Quilts and Blankets to Food, Medicines and Doctors. Clothes, Sehr and Iftar and ambulances for recovering patients were also provided by the Khandan BDWO. Sweets were distributed amongst sad mothers, widows to lessen / share their sorrows. Some mishaps also occurred during the EQ relief which were avoided due to patience of Khandan BDWO volunteers. These include incidents like bringing back the stolen tents of DHQ hospital, theft of 3 generators of the Khandan BDWO etc. Khandan BDWO also distributed necessities of life amongst the affected people. These are just the small bits of what was a massive untiring effort of Khandan BDWO during the EQ; 05. All the relevant record of collections / donations and distributions is still available with the Khandan BDWO.

[edit]HELPING THE VULNERABLE KHANDAN BDWO increased their efforts after the EQ; 05 for helping out the vulnerable of the society. The purpose is to bring them back to life, help them to stand on their feet and carry out their normal life. The volunteers of the KHANDAN BDWO identify such vulnerable families in their surroundings and neighborhoods, assess their basic needs and do the need full as per provision available with the KHANDAN BDWO. In this regard they have taken initiatives like Providing basic Educational facilities to the needy children of the society. Providing Ration to the widows. Helping the poor families with the marriage of their girls. The efforts of Khandan Blood Donor Welfare Organization are highly appreciated and accredited by the Civil Society of Mansehra.

The KHANDAN BDWO is run by the volunteers. Only one paid Employee is working as Office Boy of the organization. The most of the welfare work is carried out by making collections and donations. [edit]COLLECTION OF DONATIONS: Most of the collections are made by the devoted volunteers of the KHANDAN BDWO who sacrifices their lives. Collections are also made from the local business community of the Mansehra. Emergency collections are made from creating donation spots at various places in case of emergency. For the past two years the organization is also collecting Skins and Hides on Eid-ul-Azha for creating funds. This year the Khandan BDWO volunteers collected over 100 skins and hides which shows the faith and trust of Civil Society on Khandan BDWO. The philanthropists, Businessmen and civil society of Mansehra also contribute in the cause of KHANDAN BDWO from time to time.

[edit]ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE Khandan BDWO: More than 7000 Blood Transfusions in the past seven years. Provided and collected 973 pints of Blood during the one week Blood Donation / collection camp after Earth Quake 8oct, 2005. Efficiently maintained and run an Earthquake Relief camp for 45 days post-Earth Quake and provide the homeless people with all the necessities and requirements of daily life. (Camp was established at Zafar Ground Mansehra) Provided Free Medicines and Life Saving Drugs to many needy people with the consultation and coordination of KAT hospital staff. 5. Provided rent and transportation facilities to all the needy people which were relieved from the hospital. 6. Fulfilled the demand of 11 pints of Blood in just 05 hours made by the Blood Bank Office. Ayub Medical Institute Abbottabad. Provided 90 bottles of Blood for Swat IDPs to the AMI Abbottabad. All the Blood bottles to the badly wounded persons of PLAN International Organization terrorist bomb attack in Mansehra was provided by Khandan BDWO. Blood to the injured / dying persons of Suicide Bomb attack on Balakot Police Station was provided by Khandan BDWO The injured and wounded Policemen of Jail Road Police van blast also benefited from the blood donors of Khandan BDWO. Provided dowry and other marriage necessities to 20 families for the Honorable relieve / marriage of their daughters. Provided School uniform, copies and books to many poor orphan and needy kids for smooth continuation of their education. Khandan BDWO initiated an Orphan and widow relief project by providing them package containing Food and other necessities of life on every EID. This is now in practice for the last two years. 59 families benefited from this project this year. Khandan BDWO mobilized the local society to protest against the delayed re-construction of King Abdullah Teaching Hospital Mansehra and arranged a walk. Now the reconstruction work of the KATH is in progress. Khandan BDWO also mobilized the society to protest against the Toll tax which was being received at entrance of King Abdullah Teaching Hospital and due to the efforts of Khandan BDWO this tax was latter waived.

These were few achievements of Khandan BDWO. The biggest achievement has been winning of Hearts of the society. Certificates of Accreditation Certificates of Recognition REQUIREMENTS / CONSTRAINTS OF THE KHANDAN BDWO: Ambulance is the prime requirement of the organization for bringing the patients from disaster / accident site to hospital and taking the needy back to home after recovery. Sewing machines (25 No for now) are also required for further distributing them to the widows and vulnerable of the society so that they can make out for life. Medicines and Life Saving Drugs are also required for providing them to emergent and needy cases. This can also be carried out by making a contract with a Drug Dealer who can provide drugs in case of Emergency and Donor can pay monthly bills. Equipment for establishing a Blood Bank is also required. At present the organization is running its Blood Testing and Transfusion operations with the help and coordination of Al-Hamza Laboratory which is providing its services on subsidized rates. (Almost Free) Therefore provision of a Laboratory to the KHANDAN BDWO can do well to hundreds and thousands of people. Wheel Chairs and Clutches are also required by the organization to shift the patient from vehicle to Emergency ward and from one ward to other. Clutches are required for disabled persons. Generators and Oxygen cylinders are also required by the organization for the smooth running of its humanitarian work. If the organization can be provided with one truck of Ration monthly for further distribution amongst the hungry and vulnerable families this will do a world of good to the society.
