Team 8: Kurenai Yuhi, Shino, Hinata, and Kiba

Hinata Hyuga is a shy and quiet member of Kurenai Yuhi's Team 8, consisting of herself, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame. As the oldest daughter of the Hyuga clan, Hinata is technically the clan's heiress, though her father deemed her a lost cause at an early age – apparently of lesser skill than her younger sister, Hanabi Hyuga – and thus left her in the care of Kurenai when she became Hinata's sensei, stating, "Do what you want with her. She is of no use to me." Hinata's favorite foods are senzai (soft bean jam) and cinnamon rolls, with her least favorite being crab and eel. Her hobby is flower pressing and her favorite phrase is "self-confidence".

As a member of the Hyuga clan, Hinata possesses the Byakugan, which gives her an almost 360° field of vision. She also specializes in the Gentle Fist fighting style, which allows her to damage her opponent's chakra circulatory system and inner organs directly with even a slight tap.

At the start of the series, Hinata lacks self-confidence and gives up easily. Although she would train more than anyone else in order to improve her skills, she would immediately give up when faced with competition. In an attempt to change herself, Hinata entered the Chunin Exam, where she found the will to never give up in Naruto Uzumaki, her academy crush, whose constant determination and confidence she admires. Hinata's strong affections for Naruto seem to be a rather glaring exception, as no other girl around Naruto's age has displayed anything of the sort for him. In the first databook, Masashi Kishimoto states, "Humans are separated by differences they are born with but I want to believe that people can change and wanted to express that. Hinata's theme is 'by believing in yourself, you can become a new person.

Hinata seems to share similarities with a somewhat established anime/manga stock character — characterized by shyness, short dark or blue hair, a fierce resolve to work harder, and a crush on the unaware main character. Her appearance during the Bikochu arc is consistent with this, as the uncharacteristic encounter where the main character is shocked by a side of the character he hasn't seen before, often involving nudity, is a recurring theme as well. Compare Shinobu Maehara, Nodoka Miyazaki, Rei Ayanami and Ami Mizuno.

Chunin Exam arc

[edit]

During the first phase of the Chunin Exams, Hinata is seated next to Naruto for the written portion of the exam. When Naruto finds himself unable to answer any of the questions, Hinata allows Naruto to copy off of her paper. Although he is tempted by the opportunity, Naruto decides against it, not wanting Hinata to get in trouble if they are caught (to Hinata's surprise and embarrassment as she learns that he cares about her).

For the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exam, Hinata is pitted against her cousin, Neji Hyuga, who holds a grudge against the Main house of the Hyuga clan. Neji takes this opportunity to belittle Hinata's hopes of changing herself, giving a rather mentally unbalancing speech that concludes that personality traits and ability are determined at birth and, ultimately, people cannot change. As the ferocity of the speech and Neji's psychological warfare intensifies, Hinata is brought to the verge of tears, at which point Naruto, enraged by Neji's belittling, shouts to her to stand up for herself.

Hinata vs. Neji in the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exams.

Inspired by Naruto's words, Hinata battles Neji, much to Neji's surprise. While Hinata seems to be doing well at first, it is revealed that Neji has simply been toying with her, his abilities being much greater than her own. Although he blocks off the chakra holes in her arms, rendering her Gentle Fist attacks useless, Hinata fights on, unwilling to submit. Neji is confused by Hinata's defiance of the obvious outcome, but still retains control of the match, eventually delivering an attack to her heart. Having apparently been a finishing blow, the examiner prepares to declare Neji the winner, but Hinata gets up before he can do so.

On the verge of collapse, Hinata tells Neji that he has the situation backwards: that he is the one fighting fate, not her. Driven into a blind rage, Neji attempts to kill Hinata, though the observing Jonin intervene before he can finish his attack. Despite this, Hinata's previous injuries are too severe, and she collapses soon after. As a medical team takes Hinata away to recover, Naruto comes to checkup on her. Hinata tries to ask him if he thinks she changed at all, though she loses consciousness before she can finish.

As Naruto is heading towards the site of the final matches of the exam, he finds Hinata by the training grounds. Naruto confides in Hinata that his self-doubt is increasing, and he thinks he only appears strong to her because he's always acting strong to cover up the frustration of his constant failures. Upon hearing this, Hinata immediately tells him that it isn't true, saying that even though he fails a lot, he never gives up. Cured of his self-doubt, Naruto thanks Hinata by saying that he's started to like people like her. As Naruto heads off, he asks Hinata to watch his final match, though she is paralyzed with embarrassment by Naruto's last comment. While she does come to see Naruto's fight, Hinata's injuries from her fight with Neji are not fully healed, and she passes out before the end of the match.

Anime filler arcs

[edit]

During the Bikochu arc, Hinata convinces the rest of Team 8 to try to find some way to help Naruto overcome his loss of Sasuke Uchiha. Shino suggests that they try finding the rare Bikochu (微香虫, "faint smell bug" or "scent bug"), though Tsunade says that they shouldn't bother since the chances of finding it are very small. Uncharacteristically, Hinata insists that they should try anyway, and they manage to get Naruto to come with them after he falls from the ceiling in Tsunade's office.

As the group takes a break, Naruto gets up to go to the bathroom. While he does so, his attention is drawn to a nearby waterfall, where a nude girl is performing a sort of swirling dance that causes the water to sprout in an orb around her. Awed by this captivating sight, he approaches her and asks who she is, only to slip on a rock and fall in the water, thus alerting her to his presence. He apologizes but there is no response, as she is already gone. Though it is quite obvious that this girl was Hinata, Naruto fails to make the connection and later excitedly recounts to Kiba how he saw this "ultra-pretty girl" during the night, embarrassing her incredibly.

Hinata uses Protection of the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms.

It is eventually revealed that the Kamizuru clan is also after the Bikochu, and they battle Team 8 and Naruto to make sure that they are the ones who find it. When her teammates all lie on the verge of defeat, Hinata uses her newly developed Protection of the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms to singlehandedly beat the opposing ninja. Shino explains that the technique is a result of Hinata pushing herself to the limit so that she could be acknowledged by her father and Naruto.

During the Land of Vegetables arc, Hinata is teamed with Naruto and Choji Akimichi to escort a group of peddlers. During the course of the mission, it is revealed that one of the the peddlers is a princess, who believes Naruto is a failure. Hinata defends Naruto, saying that he has never thought about running away or abandoning people to save himself, and works hard to gain respect and become the next Hokage. The princess questions Hinata about her feelings for Naruto, and while Hinata only responds by blushing, the princess is able to deduce the answer. Later, when a group of ninja brothers try to capture the princess, Hinata is able to defeat one of the brothers by interrupting his flow of chakra, reversing his technique back on to him.

During the Konoha 11 arc, Hinata, along with Neji, uses her Byakugan to help the group of Konoha Genin find traps laid by a master trap user by the name of Gennou. When Naruto is in need of a Byakugan user he asks Hinata for help, accidentally using a double entendre which can also be mistaken as asking someone out on a date. Hinata, at a loss for words, begins to blush and twiddle her fingers. Confused by her reaction, Naruto determines that she's busy and decides to ask Neji instead, leaving Hinata confused. She also helped look for Naruto after he ran off to the Mountain with the Hokage faces. Using her Byakugan to judge the distance of the exploding tag on the giant bird Gennou summoned, she helped Naruto stop the Gennou from destroying the village.

When Gaara's student is captured by a group called 'Shiitenshounin', Hinata is a part of the medical support and scout team (along with Neji, Shino, and Sakura). She is seen very little in this arc, but she is seen more in the end. After rescuing Gaara's student, Hinata is seen sparring with Neji. When Neji corners Hinata into the wall, he stops his hit a few inches from her face. Neji then tells Hinata that they should stop sparring for the day. When she asks why, Neji says that it's about time for Naruto to be setting off. When Naruto is walking with Jiraiya, Hinata is hiding behind a pole watching Naruto, vowing to get stronger.

Part II

[edit]
Hinata, 2 ½ years later

Hinata makes her Part II debut sporting longer hair and slightly different-colored clothing. Hinata's feelings for Naruto seem to have been magnified by his long absence; she wasn't able to bring herself to greet him, opting to hide instead and fainting when he rather loudly detects her. Like the rest of her teammates, Hinata has become a Chunin during the timeskip. {{endspoiler}}
