(born 15 June 1969) is a Tanzanian and independent lawyer, an activist who served as the president of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) in the period from 2018 to 2019. She got that position after winning the party's presidential election which was held in April 2018 and thus succeeded his predecessor Tundu Lissu who led the party from 2017 to 2018.

The constitution of the TLS party allows to lead for a period of only one year. Rugemelez Nshala was elected in that election as the Vice President of the party. So he was the president of TLS until 2019 Dr.Rugemeleze Nshala when he was elected as the new president.

Fatma Karume is the daughter of the retired president of Zanzibar Amani Abeid Karume and the granddaughter of the first president of Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume

Education

After accomplishing secondary education, he began to study law in Strasbourg, France until 1991. In 1992, he continued to obtain a preliminary law degree at the University of Sussex. In 1994 She was accepted as a lawyer in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, in 1997 he obtained a doctorate in law (LLM) at the London College of Economics and in 1997 he was admitted to the bar in London. She speaks fluently three languages ​​which are: Kiswahili, English and French.

Work

Fatma Karume is a partner in the IMMMA law firm headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She has more than 25 years of experience in the field of law. She is an expert in tax law and has represented large banks in various cases. She has received many errors from the government since she started her activism on freedom of expression which she saw is rapidly disappearing and thus became very popular on Twitter as Shangazi with more than nine hundred thousand followers starting in 2018. She is also a defender of women's rights opposing the patriarchal system that has dominated the politics and culture of Tanzania. She was removed from the presidency of TLS and in September 2020 She was completely removed from the list of lawyers so that she could no longer work in the country. But this has not stopped Fatma from continuing her position and her movement.

On September 23, 2020, she was deleted from the list of lawyers, but after 243 days, the Supreme Court ruled that the decision was invalid.
