New Springville is a neighborhood in Staten Island, New York; one of the five bouroughs of New York City.

History

New Springville was founded in 1680 as Karle's Neck Village. By the early 19th Century the community included a dock (on Richmond Creek) and several freshwater springs, leading to its being renamed first Springville, then later New Springville.

By the early 20th Century New Springville was known mainly for farmland. In 1941 New Springville became home to the largest private airport in New York City when Ed McCormick opened the Staten Island Airport. The State Island Airport was forced closed a short time later due to The Second World War. The airport reopened in the latter half of the 1940's and operated until it closed in 1964.

New Springville remained largely rural until 1964 when the opening of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge led to a influx of new residents on Staten Island. In the same year the E. J. Korvette department store chain opened an outlet on the site of a former chicken farm. This was followed, in 1973, by the opening of the Staten Island Mall on the former grounds of the Staten Island Airport. Today New Springville is a commercial and administrative core of Staten Island rivaling St. George.

In addition to its explosive development as a business district, New Springville also experienced massive residential growth during the latter third of the 20th Century, with thousands of single-family homes being built there, along with apartment and condominium complexes near the Staten Island Mall.

Transportation

Due in part to it's central location and the presence of the Staten Island Mall, New Springville has developed into the second largest transportation hub on Staten Island. Several city bus routes serve the area, including service to Brooklyn and peak hour express bus service to Manhattan. Just south of the Staten Island Mall, the Yukon Bus Depot opened in the early 1980s and serves as terminal.
