Currently, there is no rail transit system in Honolulu, Hawaii, that is currently in operation. However, there have been several attempts by previous city administrations to build a rail transit system linking central Honolulu with its suburbs in an attempt to relieve growing traffic congestion on Interstates H-1 and H-2.
The most current proposal by the administration of Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor, calls for a fixed guideway to be built between Kapolei and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The proposal has generated controversy and is currently an issue in the upcoming 2008 Honolulu mayoral election.
