During discussions on this nomination on my talk page, the argument came up that if I used the admin privileges at least once, it would be a net-positive. I disagree. I'd need to use the admin privileges at least enough to make up for the effort of the RfA. A few of my hours were burned considering this RfA, and several of other users as well. It's safe to say that some tens of hours were consumed considering this RfA, hours that could have been better spent on content or combating vandalism. Were I to accept a nomination, it would bring about even more scrutiny, consuming hundreds, perhaps thousands of hours for its consideration. I would need to put a considerable burden on the existing administrator league to make it worth everyone's time to make me an admin to offload my own impact, that or change my modus operandi to carry out more admin activities, and that's not likely. -- ke4roh (talk) 23:12, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia as an administrator. Please answer these questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What administrative work do you intend to take part in?

A: Mostly obstruction of vandals. I already revert vandalism that comes up on my watchlist, like this, but I would also be able to block persistent vandals like that one - in which case I summoned help on IRC. Another time I summoned help on AIV [1]. I very nearly requested semi-protection for Alabama (which I might do myself with admin perms) because it seems to get more than its fair share of vandals. Upon seeing that there were several valid contributions from IP users, I didn't make that request, but rather suggested a change to ClueBot to be more aggressive. I've considered analyzing vandalism frequency on various pages as an input to Clue Bot and/or my own script to give hints about which pages should be (semi-)protected and which not.

2. What are your best contributions to Wikipedia, and why?

A: Probably SA-500D. I also enjoyed writing Lily Flagg. Both cover the subject thoroughly and with illustrations. Another time, I wrote a script to help me geo tag Mars craters. Perhaps I can also contribute against vandalism through some manner of script, though Clue Bot is pretty good.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?

A: Every once in awhile there's been a kerfuffle, but I have found it helps to assume good faith and treat folks with respect. I find it especially important to not bite the newcomers.

Nominee's comments

• I have been nominated for admin before 1, 2 in 2004. Both times my opinion was generally that there is plenty for me to do as a regular writer without the extra admin tag.
• In the interest of full disclosure, I offer this: In 2008, I edited Steve Jobs to make it clear that we contributors knew he wasn't dead, putting a box at the top in the style that we have for recently died, but clearly indicating that he wasn't. After 3 hours, someone who evidently didn't appreciate that flare reverted it as vandalism - the only time one of my edits has been so marked. I didn't see the point in making an issue of it.
• I will evidently never attain the requisite edit count. I have a job and family, and they take a fair amount of my time. I'm also mostly pensive about my edits, so they come slowly. The main exception to that would be the flurry of Martian craters I put infoboxes on last month, assisted by a Perl script I wrote. I might script some other assisted editing to increase the count, but the edits suggested for adminship have gone up from 3k to 20k between 2004 and this year, and frankly, I can't keep pace. There are other types of editing that produce more frequent edits, but I doubt my focus will shift much with admin.
• I will not be fazed by the outcome of this RfA. I will continue editing at my stately pace, and if I have another tool to help make Wikipedia better, I'll do my best to be judicious with it. I don't know that my presence will make the admin community worlds better, but perhaps I can offload at least my own admin needs from the admin community.
