Japan at the World's Columbian Exposition
By 1893, Japan had participated in a number of international expositions. It was in Chicago, though, where the Meiji government made a concerted effort to sway international opinion in favor of revising the "Unequal Treaties" that had been negotiated under duress; domestically, these agreements which ceded tariff autonomy and local judicial authority comprised an assault on Japan's national sovereignty. ....
