Joana G. Vicente (born in Portugal) is a plant pathologist, microbiologist and disease resistance breeder. She currently is senior plant bacteriologist at Fera Science Limited and visiting researcher at the University of Warwick.
Scientific career
[edit]Joana Vicente obtained her engineering degree in agronomy, agriculture and plant pathology from the School of Agronomy at University of Lisbon in 1993.[1][2] She obtained her Doctorate degree in 2001 in agronomic engineering, during which she researched disease resistance against Xanthomonas campestris in Brassica oleracea crops.[1] Between 1999 and 2004, she worked in the group of Steven Roberts as a research scientist at the Horticulture Research International. During that time, she focused on two projects: bacterial canker of cherry trees caused by Pseudomonas syringae[3][2], and the genetic improvement of broccoli.[1][2] She joined the University of Warwick in 2004 where she worked on multiple projects, including the characterization of short RNA involved in tomato fruit development and using genomics to develop sustainable strategies for white rust resistance in Brassica juncea. Since 2018, she is senior plant bacteriologist at Fera Science Limited, focusing her work on research and development projects relating to bacterial phytopathogens and diversity in soil microorganisms.[4]
Other activities
[edit]In addition to teaching multiple courses, supervising
Current activity
[edit]Joana Vicente is currently leading the working group responsible on assessing risk of UK maize and other monocots in the project "Xanthomonas plant diseases: mitigating existing, emerging and future threats to UK agriculture"[5][6] She is currently on the editorial board of The Journal of Horticultural Science and Biotechnology[7]
