Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth
The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth is located in St John's Wood in North West London. It is an independant charity hospital which funds St John's Hospice. It was founded on Great Ormond Street in 1856 and moved to the current location in 1899.
Within the hospital grounds is both St John's Hospice and the Conventual Church of St John of Jerusalem. The NHS practice St John's Wood Medical Centre occupies the ground floor of the main outpatient building, Brampton House.
History
The hospital was founded in 1856 by Cardinal Wiseman and the Earl of Gainsborough. The object was to receive chiefly two classes of patients - those suffering ftrom incurable disease, especially when near to death, and those with maladies, though not necessarily incurable, required long treatment. An order of the Sisters of Mercy of Bermondsey, who had recently returned from nursing soldiers in the Crimean War, were asked to undertake the care of the new Hospital, the Hospital of St Elizabeth of Hungary.
The Conventual Church of St John of Jerusalem was built on the site in 1864 by Sir George Bowyer, who had introduced the Order of Malta, Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem into England. He enlarged one of the buildings that made up the hospital to maintain the hospital's capacity and built a convent for the sisters.
The Hospital was originally located on Great Ormond Street, adjacent to the Sick Children's Hospital, now known as Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children or GOSH. Both hospital's required further room to expand so the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth sold their land to GOSH and relocated to St John's Wood. The Conventual Church of St John of Jerusalem was dismantelled and the entire building was moved 2 years after the hospital in 1901.
Birth Unit The Hospital was made famous by the large number of celebrity clients who gave birth at the Birth Unit or use the hospital's facitiies. Famous mothers include Kate Moss, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Jerry Hall, Heather Mills-McCartney, Emma Thompson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sara Cox, Kirsty Allsop and Sadie Frost.
