Tymek and the Master (pol. Tymek i Mistrz)- Polish humorous comic series for kids, autorship of Rafał Skarżycki (script) and Tomasz Lew Leśniak (illustrations), authors of George the Hedgehog (pol. Jeż Jerzy). Initially the comic was blublished in instalments in ‘’Komiksowo’’, a newspaper supplement in 2002-2004. In 2003-2005, the episodes were collected in a forty-page album published by Egmont Polska.
The comic series is about the Master, who is a wizard, and his apprentice Tymek, whose adventures are related to the study of magic, helping people in need, doing expeditions and thwarting the plans of two evil wizards, Psuja and Popsuja.
The Tymek and the Master comics are mainly two-page stories, but a couple of longer stories appeared as a part of the album, including the first section, which was a few pages long. Verbal humuor dominated in the series, with the narration being important as well: the characters are conscious of the readers and writers and of the fact that the world surrounding them is just a comic. Although the action takes place in the Middle Ages, and a lot of fairy-tale creatures show up (witches, leprechauns and werewolves), many contemporary elements appear as well, such as a modern reporter or a cameraman. In the album editions, on the last page Tymek shows the younger readers various magic tricks.
Characters
Tymek- Master’s red-haired apprentice; wears a green shirt and glasses. Seriously committed to the study of magic, he soon begins to display magic abilities. Tymek often turns out to be more inteligent than his teacher, whom he often gets off the hook. As a joke, people in the comic often mistakenly refer to him as ‘Mateusz’.
the Master- Tymek’s teacher. He has a long greay beard and wears a blue starry robe. He was the most famous wizard in the world. The Master often turns out to be very imprudent and puts both himself and his young apprentice in trouble. Occasionally, he invents different gadgets and conducts experiments. Various people and fairy-tale creatures come to him for advice. In a few stories the Master tells stories of the adventures he had had in his youth. Before the series came out, character of the Master appeared once in a George the Hedgehog strip (kid version) in ‘’Świerszczyk” magazine. The Master didn’t even have a name at the time (the story later appeared as a part of ‘’George the Hedgehog- The document’’ album).
Psuj and Popsuj- the meanest wizard in the whole world and his apprentice. They both wear black. Psuj has always been jealous of the Master, and wants to show himself to be a greater magician. Psuj often challenges the Master to duels, or simply plots to destroy him. Popsuj is a very empty-headed character who speaks with a lisp.
the King- the ruler of the land where Tymek and the Master live. He often askes the Master to help him solve his problems. Usually, these problems concern the members of his family or just general trouble in his kingdom.
