Bogdan Cierpisz (Polish pronunciation: [bo:gdan t͡ɕɛ'rpiʂ] (listen); 26 August 1930 – 23 January 1994) was a Polish painter, known for oil on canvas paintings of landscapes, especially nearby Vistula (/ˈvɪstjʊlə/; Polish: Wisła, Polish pronunciation: [ˈvʲiswa] (listen), Kazimierz Dolny and [1]. The art of Bogdan Cierpisz continues the tradition of Polish colourism, the so-called Sopot school [1].
His teachers at the School of Fine Arts in Sopot-Gdańsk included Jan Cybis, Jacek Żuławski, Józef Łakomiak and Jan Wodyński. Bogdan Cierpisz spent most of his life in Gdańsk. Later, he became the Head of the Department of Primary Education at the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology of the University of Gdańsk [1].
Biography
[edit]Bogdan Cierpisz was born on 26 August 1930, in Puławy.[1] His father, Stanisław Cierpisz was first military paramedic than sergeant in 2 Pułk Saperów Kaniowskich under command of Stanisław Magnuszewski [2]. His mother Anna Cierpisz (Bończyk) was employed at the Health Centre in Pulawy. Bogdan Cierpisz had 2 older siblings; brother Stanisław Cierpisz and sister Maria Cierpisz (in 1944 she was a nurse in Warsaw Uprising (aka: Maria, Bakcyl department).
After graduation,[] Bogdan Cierpisz moved to Gdańsk. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, in Sopot till 1954, then in Gdańsk in 1957 he had diploma [2] (school of Fine Arts was seated till 1954 in Sopot, after that in Gdańsk [3]. He was conducted by many famous artists: Jan Cybis, Jacek Żuławski, Józef Łakomiak and Jan Wodyński.
In ...he met his wife Hanna/Eryka Dowlasz during ..., with whom he had daughter Joanna.
Because of difficult material situation among - he was painting- he started working as a teacher first in.... and then in 1970 when the University of Gdańsk arrised [a]. He was teaching ......
He was a valuable and well-thought-of teacher. He died in 1994 in Gdańsk.
Significance, style, themes
[edit]He is counted as an artist who continued the tradition of Polish colourism, the so-called Sopot school. His earliest paintings are very expressive and colorful and have a very rough surface. Bogdan Cierpisz didn't paint much using brush but paint spatulas instead. The paintings of the first stage have large expressive background, espacially marine ones.
The second stage consist especially landscapes especially near Vistula river. Painting are also rough in surface but more calm. Bohdan Zadura written that Bogdan Cierpisz was ...
In addition to landscapes Bogdan Cierpisz made also numerous the sacred themes. Especially crucification and his very favorite - famous "Pieta". When he was painting his own interpretation of Pieta from Awinion, the author of the original wasn't known. He beliewed that Pieta from Awignion is the most beautiful painting. In his own interpretation he painted St. Mary's Basilica
His paintings are on display in numerous Polish museums; including the National Museum in Warsaw, National Museum in Kraków, National Museum in Poznań and National Museum in Wrocław.[
