Onderdijk is a village in the municipality of Medemblik in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is located between the city of Medemblik and the village of Wervershoof and has 1729 inhabitants (2018).

History

[edit]

The origin of the village can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The place originated as a small core that lay at the bottom of the Zuiderzeedijk, at first only on the west side. At one point, a strip of land outside the dykes was reclaimed. The new sea dike was now the watch dike, so that the original dike became the sleeper dike. The polder was called the Nes and used for horticulture.

The village is sandwiched between the inland lake De Groote Vliet and the IJsselmeer. A bulge in De Groote Vliet, called "het Hop", is a remnant of a connection with the Zuiderzee at that location. The village is traditionally a horticultural village, most of whose inhabitants had to reach their fields in the sailing polder by barge. Traditional crops were carrots, onions, cabbage and flower bulbs.

Keut

[edit]

Since time immemorial, Onderdijk has been nicknamed 'Keut', or 'Keut aan Zee' (Keut at sea). That is why the inhabitants of Wervershoof, among others, call the Onderdijkers 'Keuters'. In turn, the Onderdijkers speak of 'Gommers' in reference to the Wervershovers. The etymology of this is not unequivocal, but it usually refers to roe and roe of fish.
