Youla Chapoval (Ukrainian: Юлій Ісаакович Шаповал; Yuly Isaakovich Schapoval; 3 November 1919 – 16 January 1951) was a 20th-century painter of Ukrainian-Jewish origin.[1]
Chapoval was born in Kyiv to a bourgeois Jewish family, the third son of jeweler Yitzhak Shapoval and his wife Vera Kantor. Following the Ukrainian War of Independence, the family fled to Paris in 1924. In 1938, he began painting after meeting Picasso.[2]
