New Territories Route No. 792M is a Hong Kong bus route operated by New World First Bus. It plies between Tseung Kwan O Station and Sai Kung, both within Sai Kung District of New Territories, via Tiu Keng Leng Station, Hang Hau, Tai Po Tsai, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hiram's Highway.
Part of NWFB's "Tseung Kwan O Routes" network, it is now the sole franchised bus route connecting Tseung Kwan O New Town and Sai Kung's rural area, though there are a few minibus routes doing so. The route serves mainly passengers from Sai Kung rural area and HKUST interchanging to MTR for Hong Kong Island destinations.
History
[edit]New World First Bus, operating franchised bus routes on Hong Kong Island since 1998, won a tender consisting of 7 routes serving the Tseung Kwan O (TKO) South New Development Area from the Government in November 1999, and started to operate those routes gradually from February 2000. The current route 792M was not included in the tender.
Recognizing the potential demand of travelling between MTR stations in TKO and Sai Kung rural area after the opening of MTR's Tseung Kwan O Extension, NWFB applied to the Government for the addition of such route. The route was launched as 792 on 18 June, 2001, offering service between Choi Ming Court and Sai Kung. Initially it ran during the morning peak only to cater the needs of students travelling between TKO and Sai Kung rural area, but service was later extended to the after-school period, as well as the whole day on Sundays and Public Holidays for the purpose of serving recreational passengers.[1]
When MTR Tseung Kwan O Line commenced operation on 18 August, 2002, route 792 was converted into 792M, a whole day operation running every day. The route, having moved into the Tiu Keng Leng Station Public Transport Interchange a week earlier, offered transfer to railway at that station. However, this arrangement was unsatisfactory due to the fact that its routeing through Tseung Kwan O Town Centre was not direct enough.
The route serves the following locations:
- Tseung Kwan O Station Bus Terminus PopCorn mall
- Sheung Tak Estate
- Tiu Keng Leng Station (transfer to MTR here)
- Hang Hau
- Hang Hau Road
- Tai Po Tsai
- The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (North Gate)
- Ho Chung
- Hebe Haven
- Sai Kung Bus Terminus Sai Kung Ferry Pier
