About Political Dynasty

Political dynasty is a condition where members of the same family holding substantial political influence, frequently retaining control throughout generations and stifling political competition. It describes a family or group of individuals who continue to hold political power over several generations. Family members often hold important political positions during different election cycles, including mayor, governor, congressman, and even higher offices.

Globally, political dynasty significantly influences power dynamics, laws, and governance frameworks. There are notable instances in authoritarian governments, democracies, and monarchies. In South Asia, leadership positions have been assumed by several generations of the Gandhi family in India. In democracies like the United States, the Bush families have had a great deal of political influence. Meanwhile, heredity power in monarchies is transferred from generation to generation, like the British royal family, where historically had an impact on politics and government. For instance, Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VII, George VI, Elizabeth II, and Charles III have shaped national ideals, objectives, and unity, through their diplomatic presence and symbolic impact, rather than directly using legislative authority to support political dynasty.

In the Philippine setting, political dynasty is the consolidation of political power among particular families that hold elective office for many generations. Due to cultural traditions that place a strong emphasis on family loyalty and trust, political dynasties are nonetheless common in the Philippines even though they are prohibited by the 1987 Constitution. In the national level, the Marcos family is considered a dynastic family because when Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assumed the presidency, it marked the return of the Marcos family to power. The Marcoses currently occupy positions in both the national and local governments.
