By the time the RX-7 had appeared at the 1979 Tokyo Auto Show (held at Harumi from 1 November), a number of minor changes had been carried out in accordance with the details outlined in a Mazda document, code number P642 (the 'P' standing for production).

The RX-78 isn't the only Mazda reference. In a 2002 series, another mobile suit debuted with the name GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. And, as Mazdafarians know, X105 was the project code of the FD3S Mazda RX-7. The robot does look like an evolution of the RX-78, so perhaps the name is more than a coincidence.

When doing the FC, Mazda chose the P747 development code, because it gave no idea of the configuration of the new RX‐7. People wanted to know.

High on the list was the company's decision to delay entry into the all-new compact SUV segment with a model to compete against Toyota's RAV4 and Honda's CR-V. Mazda engineers were ready to receive their marching orders in late 1995, having displayed a nifty concept at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. Codenamed SU-V, the model effectively was killed despite a generally favorable response, then reborn as the slightly larger Tribute that shares a platform with the Ford Escape.
