Elizabeth Melamid was born in Hamburg, Germany to Dr. Julius Jonas and Julia Oppenheimer Jonas on April 13, 1921. She was a survivor of the first Kindertransport out of Germany in 1938.

Childhood

[edit]

As a young woman, Elizabeth attended Lyzeum in Othmarschen with her sister, Margarethe. Both were forced to leave school prematurely due to growing political hostilities. Elizabeth later attended a private secondary school in Germany and a commercial college in Switzerland, intending to return to Germany to study medicine at the University of Hamburg. Due to the rise of National Socialism and the restrictions on Jewish rights and freedoms, she diverted her goals and instead enrolled in the Schwedische Institut für Heilgymnastik to study physical therapy.[1]

Kindertransport

[edit]

Elizabeth escaped Germany as part of the Kindertransport, the British humanitarian effort to save children persecuted by the German Reich, in November of 1938. Her sister, Margarethe, followed her to Great Britain soon after on December 1.[2]

Adulthood

[edit]

Elizabeth married George Melamid in 1949 and later had two children, Juliet and Monica. She died in August 2015 in Stamford, Connecticut.[3]
