Often times forgotten, gender reconstruction plays a major role in the mysterious world of plastic surgery as well. There are times where people feel as though they are not inside their right physical body or the body they should have been born with. Therefore they would constantly live their lives feeling as though they are forced to live and be categorized with a certain group of people set by societal norms that can be seem to be set in stone. The idea of someone actively changing their sexual orientation before the mid 1900’s was obscured and Christine Jorgensen did this that. Christine Jorgensen was one of the first individuals to date that felt like gender reassignment was the correct route for her. Originally, Christine was assigned the male gender at birth, and her name of George Jorgensen. After joining the Army, George Jorgensen felt as though as he didn’t feel a part of this masculine group. She exclaimed in many interviews that she had a happy and enjoyable childhood, but felt something was wrong or something was out of place. He felt as a woman in most of his interactions with society. Looking for a way out of the male gender and a way in to be identified as a woman, he started taking hormone injections at the age of 24. After deciding that he was ready to become a female, he went to Denmark and went through with the first sexual reassignment surgery. Knowing that no one in the United States would even imagine or consider trying to attempt a surgery of this gave matter.  

Complications and risks (adding to this category)

There are many risks when it comes to any surgery, but gender reassignment surgery comes with a lot with extremely intense precautions and repercussions. The gender reassignment is a very long process and involves multiple steps. For example, patients have to be evaluated psychologically, endocrinologically, and surgically. The surgeries themselves can cause sexual dysfunction, gonococcal urethritis, and vaginitis. Female to male transgender persons are also more likely to be prone to HIV. Often times when there is a change physically, a change mentally will follow right after. In the case of plastic surgery, Patients who have gone through this process will have to adjust to these changes. Although it sounds easy in theory, adjusting to these major changes is not easy by any means. The negative side effect of plastic surgeries can include psychological effects that can last from just a couple of months to almost the death of the patient themselves. After multitudes of studies being done, Psychologist have found that some patients may have unrealistic expectations on how much they can change about themselves. This could often be an early sign of depression and social anxiety due to them not feeling apart of society by their looks. Once the surgery is done, there is a chance that patients will be unhappy with their results. This emotion of unhappiness can lead to more issues of self-destructive habits and misplaced anger towards those who are not in control of the situation. This is where the chances of wanting another plastic surgery increases tremendously.  Even when the surgery has been performed to the patient’s liking, it is hard to see or draw a connection to the surgery and their quality of life increasing along with their social self-esteem. Quite frankly, there is just not enough research on the mental health of effects of patients because plastic and cosmetic surgery is still relatively new to the world.

Male Cosmetic Surgery (adding to this category)

Another possibility is that men alter their bodies to have more feminine features or more masculine features. Men may want to appear with the structure or body frames of a woman because in their minds, they identify as more feminine than masculine. In order for this population of men that want to be feminine or more feminine than they already are, they may feel the need to establish an outer appearance to better identify themselves as such. In addition, there have been many circumstances where men resort to plastic surgery to enhance or make more masculine features on their body. A plastic surgeon, Dr. Matthew Mosher says that it is common for men under the age of 40 to get chest liposuction to reduce the look of man breasts. While there are men who get cosmetic surgery to look more feminine, there is also a great deal of men who get cosmetic surgery to assure themselves they look masculine and don't hold similar features to that of a woman.

Societal Prevalence (new category)

Many celebrities have participated in plastic surgery to change their look or their identity. Michael Jackson was and still is a prevalent cultural icon. He was a large figure in the world of plastic surgery as well. He underwent multiple rhinoplasty procedures, had surgery on his chin to create a dimple, had an eyebrow lift, cheekbone surgery, thinned his lips and infamously bleached his skin. He changed his entire look, including his race. Recently, Caitlyn Jenner has added to the culture of plastic surgery. Jenner underwent a tracheal shave, a facial feminization procedure, and two rhinoplasty procedures. In addition, Laverne Cox had breast implants. These implants were apart of her journey to transition to a female.
