June 1,2019: Introduction
[edit]Hello everyone, my name is Justin. I'm originally from Savannah, GA but as of right now I reside in Macon area taking classes on the Macon MGA Campus. I am a New Media and Communications major. What I want to be able to do as a career is either do script writing for a production team because writing is one of my hidden talents and passions especially writing stories. My second options is to go into the broadcasting field and be a certain type of announcer. This is my third year here at MGA. I really hope all goes well with this class. I never had an account with Wikipedia, so I hope I learn and retain a good bit of knowledge and information while taking this course

June 1,2019: What I've Learned
[edit]In this short time of developing my one Wikipedia account and going through the modules on Wikiedu modules the information that I have been reading is informative. It also has educated me on the fact that Wikipedia is more than just a secondary source when it comes to finding information. It can be another way to get to the primary article which the links are located at the bottom of the page.
June 8,2019: Evaluating a Wikipedia Article Savannah Civic Center

Information Given
[edit]The information provided about the Savannah Civic Center Wikipedia article is strong and it may need some small editing. As of right now the article gives us information about the four venues like located inside of it such as: The Martin Luther King Arena, Johnny Mercer Theatre, West and East Promenades and the Civic Center Grand Ballroom. It gives the year it was built and address in Savannah, Georgia. It also gives information about what type of event are held like: high school graduations, different expos, concerts, comedy events, etc
Information Needed
[edit]I don’t know if this is needed in the article, but it does not tell you how much revenue it brings in when there are events going on inside the center. It can use a picture of what the building looks like inside and outside of the building. Like for instance the billboard that shows the events that happening inside the building. Adding that would brighten up the article by showing the beatification of the building. It also does not share insight of how the building is going to be demolished in a couple of years.
June 9,2019: Topic of my choice
[edit]I was thinking about this for a long time and since this journal is a topic of our own choice it would be something to write about. I was thinking is if it could be possible is for the surrounding fast food restaurants like: Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, Cook-Out and another restaurant nearby Middle Georgia State University. They could partner up and make some sort of agreement where students can use their ID’s and the money on their ID’s beside using actual money. It could work the same way as the dining dollars system works on the MGA Card. The student has a certain amount of money on the card and they can use it at any fast food restaurant near the campus. It may cost quite a bit of money, but it could also add more recognition and possible a sponsorship with the college.
June 11,2019 : Article Selection
[edit]Since we are suppose to review article from our hometown and since i am not from Macon Ga I would review certain landmarks and places in Savannah, Ga. A place that's my own backyard and somewhere i can relate to.
First Option: The Savannah Civic Center
[edit]As stated in one of my journals the Savannah Civic Center Wikipedia needs some improvement on it. It explains and list all the events that happen in the Civic Center. There are a few things that can be added to help the article like how much revenue it does bring to the city of Savannah. It lacks a reference portion to it and it also doesn't give information about it why its being torn done in the near future. There can also be some added pictures to show what it looks like
Second Option: Forsyth Park
[edit]Forsyth Park is located in the Historical District of Savannah,Ga. The article talks about the development of it, all it has to offer for instance: tennis court, basketball court, soccer field and how its the home for the Savannah Shamrocks rugby club. There is a great spot to add information about some of the statues that are present there. There are pictures of of the statue located on the park but it does not explain why its there are the importance of the statues. Bring more sources to help fact check the the information present and already there would be a must as well.
Third Option:River Street
[edit]This would an original article about River street in Savannah, Georgia. It would have the history of the River Street. The past present and plans for the future of the street and as well how long the river is. It will also feature about the boats and cruises that ride along the ocean of Savannah, how long it is and the depth of it. Also any other factual information there I could find [1]orgia. It is one of the top tourist sites when coming to Savannah. [2]
June 11,2019: Topic of choosing
[edit]Making an original Wikipedia article is a choice we can do for are last project for this class. Even though it may be challenging because I never made a Wikipedia article before, but I would like to do it. Challenging myself is something I like to do and plus I believe I could learn more from doing an original article not discrediting the option where you can make a major contribution to an article. If I decide to Make my own article which I’m leaning towards I feel like I’m making a certain type of contribution to the love I have for my hometown Savannah, Georgia.
June 16,2019 Adding Citation
[edit]My experience with citations has been a difficult road to take. Going back and viewing the WikiEdu training topics have somewhat help me with it. Still learning the process about citations, I must take it upon myself to do it without the training module one day. It’s going to take time and a lot of practice for me to ace citations and like I said with help from the training modules and viewing other students’ journals and reading comments will help me be better at citations. [3]
- @Justin: I recommend revising this entry for grammar. You may want to consider reviewing the difference between "its" and "it's", run-on sentences, and capitalizing "i". I admit to not knowing grammar perfectly. I often have to look up rules myself and be corrected on them as well! June 16,2019: Topic of Choice
[edit]After spending a good amount of time going back and forth with WikiEdu and looking up about how to work around Wikipedia has taught me a lot. Like for instance last week when we were to do citations to an article on our current article which was difficult for me since it was a new technique for me. At first I didn't understand. I was getting a bit frustrated, so I took a breather and slowly went through the lesson again. Then reviewing it day by day and little by little I was able to comprehend how to add citations to an article. Also, since I’m working on making my own Wikipedia article learning how to add citations is an important technique that is necessary to learn
Like what professor Lucas says just practice, practice, practice. As well as some help from other classmates’ journals and other classmates i met in person continue to help me strive to learn more and more on Wikipedia
June 24,2019: Peer View
[edit]I don't know if it was me or not but figuring how to access the peer review page was difficult. Even after following the guidelines into how to do it. It maybe the person I decide to choice maybe or maybe not but i'm still pushing through trying to get it done.
- @Justin: I recommend posting a link to your peer review so we can read it more efficiently. Also, you may want to check your post for grammar. Further, you may want to extend your argument for as to why you thought the peer review process was difficult. June 24,2019: New Experience
[edit]I have not been able to really learn any new skills as I am working on enhancing my current skills to be able to be an expert at what I have learned so far. As time continues and I get deeper inside Wikipedia I will more than likely have a new skill under my belt and the efficient skills from the past. Like for instance as I continue my work on my own article about Victory Drive Savannah, Georgia has helped me work on citations and as well as reading the information I found and putting it in my own words so I just won’t be placing the information just in a different place and saying the same thing. Also in my article I'm working placing sub-headers[4] in my article which I just learned how to do, which was fairly simply to do. So, I suppose you can say that is something that is a new experience for me. [5]
July 1, 2019: Social Media Plan
[edit]I didn't develop a social media plan but its a good thing to have in this 21st century. Depending upon the type of social media you use will help with the services you delivering. Since Facebook was the first development of a social media which made any company promote their business . As it grew and got older companies had to be aware of the audience that was on that type of media platform which became for the people give or take 35 years or older. Then Came Instagram and Snap-chat which was popular for the teens which helps younger entrepreneurs do their thing. Goals for a successful social media is to develop a to determine what you want your business to promote and your targeted audience. If you don't have a targeted audience and the right platform it wont be that successful
July 1, 2019: Topic of my Own
[edit]As I continue to find information and facts about Victory Drive Savannah, Georgia. I've learned a lot of new information about the street itself that I didn’t know about. Even after talking about it with my family and friends that still live in Savannah, they are interested about the information I found. I'm not going to say what I found in the articles and other sources I used to put this Wikipedia Article together in this journal because I want to preserve the information I found until I Finish. Finding information about something that is present in your own backyard just makes you have or add pride in your city. If you ask me, I think that is why professor Lucas wanted us to do this assignment or at least one of his reasons. Challenging the information that is already present and out in the world is always questionable and that's why we have to go out and find the real true answer. Even if the answer is still right, but it doesn't hurt to add to the little-known facts that you know that can help keep the article up to date.

July 8, 2019 TOC
[edit]Taking a trip back home to Savannah Georgia and paying attention to the beatification of Victory Drive made me appreciate the significance on that street. I never really knew the whole history about Victory Drive I just knew it was dedicated for the soldiers that where involved in WWI. Doing all this research about what it uses to be and what is now is an amazing sight to see. Just thinking about what it was be back then to what it is now just amazes me. More than likely in the past when it was recently developed it was fuller of life but now it’s not really taken care of that much which brings the significance of the whole street down. Many people are concerned about how the street isn’t as beautiful as it was before [6]

[edit]Writing and editing these articles has been useful for the enhancement of researching and writing skills. Not only does it help you with using the correct diction so that your readers can understand what your trying to say. You don't want to confuse the reader when it comes to writing out information because they won’t be able to understand what you are trying to say. When it comes to the research part of things it helps with not just reading and grabbing information from one article. Even though in English class professors tell you not to concentrate on the first thing that pops up but other articles as well. Getting further and further with all the editing and other assignments has really helped me hone my writing skills. One of my passions is to write and when I get into writing I can write for days. In the future I want to be able to use those skills for writing scripts and stuff and with this class if its needed or necessary for me to research about something I can use the information I learned from this class. - @Justin: I agree that this class has helped out with writing skills and that it is especially important to keep in mind that other people will be looking at the work we have done and they will need to be able to understand it. I feel like with writing just some regular essays, it matters less about how you write it because the only people who are really going to be seeing it are yourself and the teacher who has to grade it but since we are using wikipedia, anything we do to another article has to be done with many other people in mind. July 15, 2019 Final Journal Reflective Essay
[edit]- In the beginning of the class I was lost and didn’t know what to do probably just like everyone else. Even before the class began, I tried to access the syllabus beforehand and couldn’t access it for some reason. after clicking on the link that lead me to the weekly outline and everything, I was relieved. Even though I was relieved from that situation another situation acquired. Even though the layout and everything on the weekly schedule looked simply I was just caught up in the way Brightspace/D2L was laid out. Having things to remind you of what you need to get done and due dates and everything. I know I probably don’t sound like a millennial right now because of the technical difficulties I was have but I eventually I made it out the hole. I hop right back in the hole again when I was trying to link my journals so everyone could see them. So, I was getting frustrated with that but taking my time and reading the instructions about twenty times I go it and went about my way. Finally starting the course and doing the work but I didn’t do everything I was supposed to be doing. At the start of everything I could just do the journals and only journals because that’s what I thought this class was just about. Why I don’t know that was just my mindset at the time.
- I did do all the training modules but didn’t take the time to learn them. Basically, I was doing the bare minimum.It showed in the first grading evaluation Dr. Lucas gave me. I decided to take advantage of some time management I developed. I would try to do everything during the weekend because that’s about the only time I had available to sit down and do everything. After getting the evaluation I didn’t like I finally sat down and started to become more focus on what the was assigned to us. After getting my stuff together I started to become more experienced with Wikipedia. The only thing I needed to work on that I really wasn’t focused on now is the journals. The only thing I was focused on firsthand I got sidetracked on and didn’t do it to the best of my ability. When it came to write my journal entries I would just write and not proofread or edit what I wrote down. Now I would write about what Dr. Lucas want us to write about like for instance discussing what we learned when we went through the different modules or if it was a topic of our choice. I had no problem with any of that it was just the fact that I was just writing. No links, no references, no way to back the information that I just wrote down. Many students wrote in my journal that I needed to add those additions because that would make my journal what it needed to be. I never got around to it till now and now that I have done it, it makes my journals look more creditable and rather than just information being on a website.
- When it came to evaluating articles and editing them, I would read them and see if there was anything wrong with the wording or anything. I know it sounds crazy how could I go back and edit a whole article that someone else wrote but I couldn’t go back and edit my own stuff. It crazy how that happened. :During the whole course I felt like I wasn’t doing my best. I guess because I didn’t like my own work I was doing. When it was our time to either make our own contribution to Wikipedia by doing our own article or editing one that was already published that’s when I knew I had to put my best foot forth. So, I got into it. Reading the directions, it told us to do things about famous places or landmarks in Macon. I was hesitant because I wasn’t from Macon and I felt like if I did, I would fall back into the same track I was in before. Remembering asking Dr. Lucas during the first time we meet, and I asked him about it he said, “If I wasn’t from here, I could have done something from my hometown”. Plus, that information was present in the directions. Even if the information is written in my face I ask just for a source of confirmation.
- So, I was excited even elated about this. Many places in my hometown of Savannah just popped in my head from left to right. First it was the Savannah Civic Center which had an article, but I was unable to find other information on it. As well as someone came and added a piece of information that I was going to add. River Street was going to be my next option. It would have been a great article to write about, but I felt like it wasn’t going to be my best article because it was difficult to find information about river street. There would have been information that only certain Savannah citizen that grew up that I would have not been able to back up. Finally, I picked Victory Drive. Victory Drive has a amazing history and meaning to the soldiers that where involved in WW1. So, since I had what I wanted to write about then came the hard part and no I’m not talking about the research. The hard part was going back and learning all the information I didn’t do in the beginning like adding citing, adding links, adding headers or sub-headers. You know stuff we were supposed to do, learn and become expects about with out going back and trying to figure out how to do it rather than having an idea in how to do it. After going back to the skills, I didn’t attempt to do I found that they were simply things to do.
To wrap all this up my struggles in this class were just not putting my best effort in everything I did. Doing the bar minimum and not my fullest potential killed me. My success where eventually going back and learning the things I needed to learn to be the best I could be at becoming a Wikipedia expert.
