Dr. Catherine L. Zeman

Catherine L. Zeman is an American environmental health scientist, academic, and educator. She is a full Professor in the Health Sciences department at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Her career spans over three decades with significant contributions to environmental health, public health education, and sustainability.

Early Life and Education

Catherine L. Zeman earned her Ph.D. in Preventive Medicine with an emphasis in Environmental and Occupational Health from the University of Iowa in 2000.[1] She holds an M.S. in Environmental Studies, Science Track, from Southern Illinois University[2] and a B.S. in Physical Anthropology and Human Ecology from the same institution.[3] Additionally, Zeman has an A.A.S. in Registered Nursing from Lewis and Clark Community College, where she also earned an A.S. in Biology.[4]

In 2011, she completed a certification from the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute (EPHLI) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), further solidifying her expertise in public health leadership.[5]

Academic Career

Zeman began her academic career at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), where she served in various capacities from 1993 to 2021.[6] She was the Director of the Recycling Reuse Technology Transfer Center (RRTTC) at UNI, a position she held from 1997 until her departure.[7] Zeman was awarded tenure in 2004 and was promoted to full Professor in 2012.[8]

In 2021, Zeman joined James Madison University, where she served as the Academic Unit Head of Health Sciences in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies for three years. She is currently a full Professor at James Madison University.[9]

Research and Publications

Zeman's research primarily focuses on environmental health, public health disparities, and sustainability. She has published extensively on topics such as nitrate exposure, environmental epidemiology, and health education.[10] Her work has appeared in various peer-reviewed journals, including Environmental Health Perspectives, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, and American Journal of Health Education.

Recognitions and Awards

Zeman was awarded a Fulbright Research/Lecture Award in 2004, which allowed her to conduct research and teach at the Institutes of Public Health in Cluj Napoca, Romania. Her work in Romania focused on environmental health disparities, particularly in vulnerable populations.[16]
