Jan Top Christensen (Diplomat) is a former Danish Ambassador to the Philippines and to Lebanon, and a former senior official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Retired in 2019, Christensen is currently a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute in Ottawa, Canada, and the representative for Danes Worldwide in Ontario.
Christensen resides in Ottawa with his spouse, Dr. Kieu Phung and their daughter, Anna.
Diplomatic Career
[edit]Jan Top Christensen began his international career in 1987, when he was appointed by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees as Head of Field Office on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. For three years, Christensen oversaw the activities of the First Asylum Camp, which welcomed over 12,000 Vietnamese refugees and assisted with their re-settlement to other countries. In 1990, Christensen joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen and in 1996, he was appointed Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Danish Permanent Mission to the UN in New York. Following his return to the Ministry in Copenhagen, Christensen served for six years as Director for the Department for Humanitarian Crisis Response and Policy Development.
In 2007, Christensen was named Danish Ambassador to Lebanon, where he served for nearly six years. In 2013, he was appointed Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but was unable to take up the assignment as a result of bilateral political differences. In 2014, Christensen was appointed Ambassador to the Philippines with the task of reopening the Danish Embassy. He served until 2019, when he retired from the Danish foreign service.
Academic Background
[edit]In 1979, after earning a degree at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, Christensen joined the Institute of Political Science. In 1983, Christensen joined the Institute of East-West Studies, at the Danish National Council for Social Sciences, as a research fellow, where he served for four years.
In 2018, Christensen edited and published the book, Hans Christian Andersen and José Rizal: From Denmark to the Philippines[1]
Following his retirement in 2019, Christensen joined the Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI) and has written extensively, in Danish and English, on international issues.Cite error: There are <ref>
