John Poyser was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 29-May-69. He emmigrated to Canada as a child, with his parents Chris and Rosemary Poyser in 1975; settling in Sarnia, Ontario.

Education
He attended St. Augustine's Catholic Elementary School and St. Patrick's Catholic High School. He was later accepted into Geological Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 1988, switching to Civil Engineering in his second year and graduating in 1993 with a B.A.Sc. Hons, Co-op in Civil Engineering specializing in Water Resources & Environmental Engineering.

Post-University
John cycled from Waterloo, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia over that summer and shortly after the death of his Grandmother (Delores DuQuesnay George) he decided to settle in Vancouver permanently in September, 1993.
