Category Question

[edit]

Hello, O Cryptic One. What does this kind of edit to a category label do, exactly? I'm referring to the change in the Newbery Medal cat., rather than the 2001 book cat. addition. Joyous (talk) 18:57, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

It sorts the article title under S in the category, instead of A. —Cryptic (talk) 19:04, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I was *cleaning* the page from that Pokemon and Spice Girls nonsense.

Regards, Ivan

Joy, if you check what were the changes I made (check the IP), you will see that I was *not* repeat *not* vanalizing the page. I saw Pokemon, Spice Girls and that third part and tried to remove them. Please check who added them and see with him/her.

Thanks, Ivan

I'm sorry, Ivan. You're right, I was in error. Joyous (talk) 01:51, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

Hey no problem man - you're just trying to help, same as I am. I was just afraid that you were going to block me due to the error. Happy editing.

Thanks, Ivan

Heh heh, that's a good one. It's like locking yourself out of the apartment!

Not a problem. I was trying to see where you were unblocked, but I couldn't figure it out. Zoe 05:45, September 7, 2005 (UTC)

Good evening. I have been working on a top-to-bottom rewrite of the Guide. My goals were, in order, to:

  1. Reduce the size of the page
  2. Remove the references to "voting" and return the tone to one of discussion
  3. Clean up the order and flow

My current draft is 7 screens long (down from 13 screens in the "live" version. I think that I have kept all the relevant lessons, instructions and good advice. I did sacrifice some of what, in my opinion, were rare or secondary situations.

Before I post this for wider discussion, I wanted to ask the opinion of a few people like you who have been intimately involved with the existing process. When you have a minute, would you mind commenting on the draft? Did I cut too much? Have I changed the actual intent of any instruction? Do you consider this better, worse or neutral? By the way, I'd also appreciate any help with format and clean-up. I'm getting bleary-eyed. Thanks. Rossami (talk) 01:29, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

[edit]

Hi Joy! Thanks for your strong support on my RfA (and for your support previously, too) and the enthusiastic comment. I was amazed at how wide the support became during the week. Please do keep an eye on me and my logs, especially while I'm learning the ropes of my new buttons. Thanks again, Splash 18:32, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

Administrator

[edit]

Hey, Joy, it's me again. I have a question. How to I become an administrator? I have created so many more articles, and helped edit articles. I even made a page. So, what else do I have to do? DiddyKong1234 05:26, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism..

[edit]

Sorry, what are these procedures you mentioned.. I'm new but I learn fast.. NIghTbeAst seems to be doing this with Kuma\War, he is just wiping an article over and over again and replacing it with his own written one. I did not write the original article but it seems much more NPOV than his version, full of his own political commentary. He's been reverting America's Army from another user repeatedly too, he seems to think because he wrote "the first" article he has all power to keep it the way he wants and ignore others.. He constantly derides me for "personal attacks", yet he does the same thing just in a more underhand manner such as pasting quotes about ignorance and such.. --86.132.35.147 17:03, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Ladying

[edit]

Thanks. I usually try to make sure regarding what meets criteria for speedy deletion. After all it's easier to put a speedy tag and go on than to set up on AfD properly. -WCFrancis 03:05, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

You put the Afd on Glavin, I agree that it needs to not be. Would you object if I just redirected it to Professor Frink? If you'd prefer, I'll just suggest a redirect instead, but it seems to me like the speedy redirect is the easiest solution. Friday (talk) 01:54, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

As for whether it's ok to do while the Afd is in progress, I've seen some editors say yes and others say no. It seems a bit ambiguous, so I asked you as nominator. There's been some backlog on these lately so I'm looking for ways to take some of the load off of Afd. Since you said you don't have a problem with it, and since I strongly feel it's the right thing to do, I'll try the redirect and see how it goes. Friday (talk) 02:50, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

DiddyKong1234

[edit]

Hi Joyous. I saw your comment on DiddyKong1234's talk page. I believe you'd also dealt with him back before he registered. This one user is driving up my wikistress level more than anything I've encountered since I started editing here.( This may be attributable to his tendency to contribute to articles about The Legend of Zelda series, which is my pet project, too. This is also the reason I can't just walk away.)
I don't want to resort to newbie-biting, but Diddy( a.k.a. 24.21.191.65) is really starting to bother me, and though I can't speak for others, I know a few things have gotten to them too, and I think bad feelings toward him would run high among Zelda editors if a few of us didn't end up reverting, correcting, or rewriting much of what he contributes. I keep a folder in my favorites of pages which need to be merged or AfD'd, and pretty much every article he creates winds up there. His articles are often short, unencyclopedic pieces on non-notable parts of video games, usually consisting of what should be contributions to the game articles themselves. The spelling and grammar can only be described as regrettable, and the information isn't even always accurate. When it is accurate, much of it is similar in form to a strategy guide, and therefore appropriate for Wikibooks, but not the Wikipedia. On the AfD pages of one or more articles, it's been mentioned how video game articles have been very successfully tied to guides in Wikibooks in the past.
He created several articles on individual songs( or groups of songs with made-up categories as titles) from the Zelda series, and in an attempt to curb this I created the Legend of Zelda series songs article, and redirected the other articles there.( My original intent was to improve and then link or merge his articles, but I realized that "improving" his articles essentially consisted of rewriting them due to the major style problems.) His response was to restore several of these unfortunate pages and link them from the new page.
He contributes tons of great images, but never clarifies the copyright status. At some point, I'm feeling like I'll have to go through his Contribution history and tag them all as unknown copyright status. All this, and he wants to be an admin!!! I'm just thankful he hasn't figured out how to use RfA yet.
You probably can't block him just for being a nuisance, but I was hoping you'd have some advice as to how I should proceed. He has repeatedly ignored comments from me( very civil and even kind, I think you will see) and other users on his talk page, or responded but then failed to follow through with action. This includes a failure to preview his edits, meaning that some sort of NetNanny-esque program on one of the computers he uses tends to remove words from certain articles when he edits them. His eagerness is nice, but his actions are shortsighted and stubborn. If he'd just take a little more time to think over his contributions, I'm sure he could be a decent editor, but it seems from his attitude like he might be too young. I don't want to lose my cool and say/do something I'd regret, but I don't want to clean up after him all the time or abandon the Zelda articles either. Should I start a Wikiquette alert or an RfC, perhaps?? Thanks in advance for your help. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 14:37, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

    • Sorry for the delay in response; my internet connection has been sporadic lately. I have been in some contact with our friend, partially via his talk page, and partly in email. I agree that he's probably quite young, and he does seem quite...reluctant to follow the advice left by other editors here. At one point, I thought he really did appear sincere in his efforts to improve his editing, but he likes to toss in a little vandalism now and then. I don't really have a lot of advice, because I'm not convinced that he really wants to improve. It's possible that an RfC might wake him up a bit. Joyous (talk) 03:14, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
He doesn't seem to be that active at the moment, perhaps he got discouraged, or perhaps school's just catching up with him. If he becomes a nuisance again, I'll just go ahead and start an RfC. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 16:27, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

I had not logged into my account for quite some time. I have just done so and checked my contribs some of which I did not make. The IP 194.2.41.84 is not me. It is in Holland. I am in the eastern USA. Below you can check with the Arin Whois Database for info on this number. The comments aren't mine but they were interesting. I have just turned 27 and wasn't even born yet. I can't see why they are called vandalism though.Dakota 04:22, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I like that thought. What always amuses me more is that they spend hours writing their rants and what they think is original vandalism, and we roll it back in a click (often unread). What a sad life they must have. --Doc (?) 15:50, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

WP:CP

[edit]

Hi, you've reported copyright infringements to WP:CP in the last week, a new measure was recently passed to allow the speedy deltion of new pages that are cut and paste copyvios. Please follow these instructions if you come across this type of copyvio. Thanks. --nixie 00:23, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Blatant copyright infringements may now be "speedied"

If an article and all its revisions are unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider and there is no assertion of permission, ownership or fair use and none seems likely, and the article is less than 48 hours old, it may be speedily deleted. See CSD A8 for full conditions.

After notifying the uploading editor by using wording similar to:

{{nothanks-sd|pg=page name|url=url of source}} -- ~~~~

Blank the page and replace the text with

{{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

to the article in question, leaving the content visible. An administrator will examine the article and decide whether to speedily delete it or not.

Uhhhh ok

Ruth Crisp fixed

[edit]

hi ya..

re: Ruth_Crisp I did as i intended, and made the page as reasonably compliant with the aspirations of most of us here in this space. Yes I am quite excited and anxious about how this works. It is a fantastic evolution of the species!!! this thing is an amazing environment and while it can be fast moving it doesnt have to be as vicous as it is. That's a POV of course. I think it would be good for all of us to be a little more relaxed and quietly determined, as opposed to striking so quickly!!

what ever happened to faith and trust?

the issue seems to be don't use the pages as a sandbox? well i dont even know where the sandbox is, its un-necessary for me.

my intent was to hold the page for a day or two untili got back with the info and time to bring it up to standard. The reason why I created it was due to a older error of a page name with a lower case surname first letter. I wasnt sure how to change its name and it was much easier to start a new one intending to delete the old. ref: Ruth_crisp feel free to go and delete that, it's obviously no longer needed.

my intent, in making it a day earlier than i was ready to work on it, was to have a link from another page that I was making, intact. ie so it would be found by the other page with a reference to it.

bottom line... I trust that your intent was correct, I'm quite sure that you did in fact act as you thought you should, thats the cool thing about us, we can trust the majority of humans to behave in predictable and trustworthy manners. That is the basic precept of credit, that 1% will fail. I'm just surprised that well meaning people have so much time to run around trying to keep things 'correct' when a little patience and a watch would save the extra effort that I have expended in trying to understand all this.

Obviously i am new to this but i do have many tens of thousands of my OWN and SECURE web pages created over the last 6 years and it is a different philosophy to get used to.

I think its probable that we share a similiar philosphy; I do care about accuracy and objectivity where necessary, and opinion and individualism as well. Creativity is good. Commercial art is ok.

I have donated some rare and interesting images to freedom... in fact I have published thousands of very rare images that I own, but have no control over once they are exposed on a web page. I think the notion of control in this space is displaced by the notion of collaboration and trust.

I do understand that like watching TV news, reading the bad stuff here or fixing stuff a lot does lead to a sense of the race being much worse than it actually is, ie the mindset alters according to what you expose it to....

I hope to work WITH you in future and if you are up for admin then good luck, thats a worthwhile activity for sure. Mozasaur 07:20, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
