Introduction The Upper Hiwassee Highlands American Viticultural Area, or AVA for short, is located in southwestern North Carolina and northern Georgia. Mr. Eric Carlson, owner of Calaboose Cellars in Andrews, NC, submitted the AVA petition in 2013 on behalf of the vineyard operators of the Upper Hiwassee Valley. The area was awarded its AVA status in 2014 under the rules and regulations of the Tax and Trade Bureau of the US Department of the Treasury.
