Census figures from 2006 put the estimated population at 607 residents.[1] The area itself is primarily agricultural land with a small nucleus of residential and sporadic commercial properties. Some notable businesses in the area include the Currajah Hotel, Northern Iron & Brass Foundry and the nearby Mundoo School.
Early History
[edit]The township was founded in the early 1900s after the relocation of a sawmill from Innisfail which had burnt down. The Currajah Hotel opened for business on 1st January 1911 and the North Coast railway from Innisfail was completed in 1924.
The origin of the name "Wangan" is believed to have come from the local Ma:Mu people and is said to mean 'crow', the nearby swimming hole after which the Hotel is named is said to mean 'running water'.
