Appearance
Vapor Bubble
[edit]A vapor bubble can be present in a melt inclusion or fluid inclusion due to the differential cooling of a host phenocryst and associated melt or fluid inclusion. During cooling, if the volume of melt or fluid decreases more than the host phenocryst, a vapor bubble may form to account for this difference in volumes. In some cases, the volatiles in the melt or fluid will exsolve into the vapor bubble and could contain a significant portion of the original volatile concentration.
Analysis
[edit]Determination of the contents of vapor bubbles includes Raman spectroscopy,[1][2] heating the inclusion and vapor bubble and then quenching the glass to be analyzed by FTIR[3] and modeling based off an equation of state (Hamilton in prep).[4]
