John Thomas Mbezi was born and raised in Tanzania, where he developed a strong passion for social justice and healthcare services. His career path was inspired by the teachings of Julius Kambarage Nyerere, specifically Nyerere’s 1968 book Ujamaa: The Essays on Socialism, which focused on the fight against poverty, ignorance, and disease.
Thomas pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Work, driven by his desire to address these issues through social welfare and healthcare services. He has since built an impressive career in the healthcare sector and is currently Planning in pursuing a Master’s in Public Health.
Career
Thomas began his career as a Medical Social Worker in Tanzania, where he worked at several hospitals, including Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC), Tanga Regional Referral Hospital, before taking on his current role at St. Walburg’s Referral Hospital in Lindi. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the hospital’s social welfare programs, including patient counseling, palliative care, and maternal and newborn health services.
He has worked extensively on projects aimed at addressing gender-based violence (GBV), financial disparities in healthcare, and child welfare. His work in fundraising and outreach has been critical in improving patient care and access to social services, particularly for vulnerable populations.
