Jim Rose,a 6-foot-3 guard of Hazard, Ky.,played for Hazard High School where he started in varsity basketball for five seasons. Rose was a two-time All-State player and All-American at Hazard High School.Rose led Hazard to three consecutive state tournaments starting in 1964.No high school freshman had a more impressive Sweet Sixteen debut than Rose. According to the Lexington Herald archives, the 6-3 guard had 33 points and 17 rebounds as Hazard beat Oldham County in front of 12,000 fans in UK's Memorial Coliseum. Rose had 20 points and nine rebounds in a quarterfinal win over Bourbon County
. And Rose had 22 points and three rebounds in a semifinal loss to Seneca, which went on to win the state title with Wes Unseld leading the way. As a senior, Rose averaged 26 points and 15 rebounds.
He played college basketball for Western Kentucky University and was the second-leading scorer on the 1971 team that reached the Final Four. He finished his career with 1,133 points in 81 games in three varsity seasons, the 12th-highest scoring total by a Topper at that time and 29th now.He was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and averaged 14.0 points for his career.He went on to star at Western Kentucky and helped the Hilltoppers beat UK in the 1971 NCAA Tournament on their way to the Final Four.
Rose was the 28th selection in the 1971 NBA draft, where he was taken in the second round by the Boston Celtics. He was a second-round pick of the Memphis Tams in the ABA.
