JoeSmack's News Room
[edit]Welcome to my news room. Here you'll find various sources of Wikipedia (and beyond) news and news summary sources. Wikipedia is finally at a point where there is a diverse range of current info coming out about it. This is meant to be a place to hopefully get it all on one plate. There's plenty to go around, dig in...
[edit]
Link Host Source Type Description Wikipedia Signpost Internal Periodically Straight-up news sheet about wikipedia and wikipedia projects. Updated weekly (every Monday, sometimes Tuesday). Sometimes the Signpost's tipline supplies news that doesn't make the sheets. Wikizine External Periodically Often finds news that slips through the cracks of the Wikipedia Signpost. It is also a more casual and occasionally humorous news source. Updated weekly, sometimes erratically. Available for email subscription, and its wikispace can be found here. WikipediaWeekly External Periodically, Audio In a podcast/talk show type of casual style, this program is about a half hour long or more and covers a wide range of Wikipedia nooks and crannies. Created by veteran wiki users, it covers many contemporary topics backed by well-versed wisdom (often nitty gritty/advanced). Its wikispace can he found here, and its podcast can also be accessed via iTunes. Foundation / Wikipedia mailing list summaries Internal Periodically An unannotated summary for the mailing lists Foundation-l and Wikipedia-l. The Foundation forum supplies more big picture questions/comments about Wikipedia and beyond. The Wikipedia forum is a bit more focused. They are both frequented by some very knowledgable people, who often like to talk too much (which is why the summaries are good). Wikipedia Community Portal Internal Occasionally The Community Portal holds the Community bulletin board, a place that announces new projects relevant to the Wikipedia community at large. Fresh and upcoming policies and wikispaces that are looking for eyes and hands often post here; it is a good place to see what kind of ideas are brewing. Wikipedia Village pump news Internal Occasionally The village pump news section is used for news or updates that are expected to require public discussion, rather than, say, specific actions, or discussion on their own talk pages. It can be an interesting place. Sometimes this is specific to Wikipedia, sometimes it's not, sometimes the place is garbage - viewer beware. Wikipedia Announcements Internal Sporadically This is a place to get updated on Wikipedia milestones statistics and software/policy level changes. Since they don't happen too often, it is updated only occasionally, from days to weeks at a time. A good place to go to see 'where Wikipedia is at and where it's been'. Wikimedia's Goings-on Internal Sporadically This page is a central point for community-wide members to collect information about cross-wiki projects and report recent goings-on. It is updated sporadically, but when it does it is usually to mention some pretty big stuff that has happened or is happening (i.e. the decided location of Wikimania, board elections, logo voting, etc.). Wikimedia Foundation current events Internal Sporadically Over here this mostly exists to mention current events on a Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) level. This means big and this means rarely, but if you just want to know the major stuff and no nonsense, this is a good place to get some very light news in. Reminiscent of the above 'Wikimedia's Goings-on'. Wikipedia Press coverage Internal Frequently For worldwide coverage of Wikipedia news, step over to the press coverage page. From here you can see user's rehash of external news or jump externally yourself to see Google/Yahoo, etc; these links will grab anything with 'Wikipedia' in it. You may soon realize that reporters don't often get it right or get it current, but still, good places to see what the rest of the world gets in their daily paper. If you want, a broader range of Wikipedia in the media exists, although info is much more slow coming in certain domains. Wikipedia tutorial External General Tutorial, Audio/Visual Ok, not actually news but if news is describing good current information, Librarian John Hubbard does well. He has made a four part Flash presentation about what Wikipedia is, how it works and various other topical subjects. A great well of information that branches out from Wikipedia to topics of reliability, other wiki projects, noted problems etc. For new and old users.
If you have any other news sources that you think could be included here, grab my ear at this talk page or my user talk. JoeSmack Talk(p-review!)
