Idol's Eyes is an upcoming crime drama thriller heist film, directed by Olivier Assayas, based on the 2007 Playboy feature Boosting the Big Tuna by Hillel Levin,[1] with the screenplay by Assayas.[2] It described the real events, when in 1978 a group of burglars in Chicago got murdered, after stealing the 70-carat diamond from Chicago mafia boss Tony "Big Tuna" Accardo.[3][4] It stars Robert Pattinson as the ringleader of the burglars based on John Mendell involve in the robbery and Robert De Niro as Tony Accardo.[5][6]

It is Assayas first United States production.[7] Michael Benaroya produced the film by Benaroya Pictures along with Charles Gillibert by CG Cinéma.[8] It is Assayas and Gilbert's fourth collaboration after Summer Hours (2008), Something in the Air (2012) and Clouds of Sils Maria (2014).[9]

In 2010, Todd Field was attached to the project then titled Hubris, developing it for Universal Pictures and screenplay was written by Robert Moresco based on Hillel Levin's article and FBI's Operation Family Secrets.[10][11] After the project with Field shelved, Olivier Assayas came on board[12][13] and re-wrote the script, saying that "I didn't like the (existing) script I read, it was OK, but you know...for some other director. And yet it was great material. I couldn't believe no one had explored it." Assayas explained that he developed the script with the help of Levin, who came on board as an advisor and researcher and said that "I thought: Maybe I could get into the story somehow if I had someone in Chicago to help me with it, it's not my culture; it's not my city; I needed a guide, someone who could vouch for the truth of what I was writing about."[14][6] Assayas also changed the film's name to Idol's Eye after the famous diamond.[15]

Casting

Robert Pattinson joined the cast in early May 2014,[16] as John Mendell, a machine shop owner in Lincolnwood and also a freelance "wire man" capable of disarming the most difficult burglar alarms.[6][5] Pattinson first met Assayas in October 2012 in New York and has been attached to the project since 2012.[15] Assayas said that "I knew I wanted him (Pattinson) for the leading role. We had a long conversation in London about the project."[17] It was announced in late May 2014 that Robert De Niro has joined the cast as Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo along with Rachel Weisz.[18][5][1]

Production began in October 2014 in Toronto. Talking about the film Assayas said that "It’s a true crime story, part of Chicago lore. End of the 1970s, burglars confront the Outfit, specifically mob über-boss Tony Accardo—the kind of guys you see in Michael Mann’s Thief, which was inspired by similar characters. I wrote the screenplay based on a Playboy piece by Hillel Levin (“Boosting the Big Tuna”) who also did all the historical research I needed to establish the facts. The interesting part of it is that in the process we discovered Hillel had initially gotten many of the facts wrong, and he ended up completely reconsidering his own reading of the story."[2]

Talking about his character in the film, Pattinson said that "My character is this slightly delusional lost child, everyone always glamorises criminals – it feels inevitable in movies – but in this it’s really not glamorised. It is quite dense. It’s really serious. Very political."[19]

Filming
