User:Jnestorius/List of multiple world champions in boxing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In boxing, a multiple champion is a boxer who has been the champion of multiple weight class (boxing)es. It is mostly applied to professional boxers who have won multiple world titles.

History

[edit]

In the early twentieth century, there were nine widely recognised weight classes, and world champions were proclaimed by acclamation: if the media acquiesced in a promoter's description of a fight as being for the world title, then ipso facto it was. In subsequent decades, the number of widely-used weight classes has increased to seventeen, by adding two below flyweight and six intermediate classes "super" (slightly heavier than) or "junior" (slightly lighter than) a neighbouring class. In addition, there is a proliferation of sanctioning bodies, each awarding its own world titles; and there are also virtual titles awarded by the boxing media based on varying interpretations of the lineal championship. These factors have made it increasingly easy for a boxer to become a multiple champion.
