Jack Geller is a recurring fictional character on the television show Friends, which aired on NBC from 1994-2004.[1] Jack is played by Elliott Gould, an academy award nominated actor who co-starred in other notable films such as Oceans Eleven and Capricorn One.[2] Jack is featured in 21 episodes throughout the show's ten seasons.[3]
Role
[edit]Jack plays the father of Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) and Monica Geller (Courteney Cox). Jack is the husband of Judy Geller, played by Christina Pickles.[4] Jack is best known for his ill-timed and inappropriate comments [5]. In season seven, episode 23, titled "The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding: Part 1," Jack asks Chandler Bing's mother "so, are you his mother or his father?"[6] When reprimanded, Jack often justifies his words by whining "I'm just saying."[7] Jack lies to his in-laws about being a law attorney and the audience learns that Jack secretly smokes in season 7, episode 13, "The One Where Rosita Dies". [8] Jack has four grandchildren Ben Geller, Emma Geller-Green, Jack Bing, and Erica Bing.[8] In season 8, episode 1, "The One After 'I Do'" Jack forgets Ben is his grandson as he declares Emma to be his first grandchild.[8] Jack Geller and his wife Judy live in Long Island, New York untill putting their house for sale in ""The One Where Rosita Dies". [8]
Appearances

Relationships
[edit]Monica and Ross Geller
[edit]Like his wife, Judy, Jack favors his son Ross. In season 7, Episode 13, "The One Where Rosita Dies" Jack tells Ross "I suppose we may have favoured you unconsciously, you were a medical marvel." In the same episode, Monica references that her parents kept Ross' room as a shrine to him but Jack turned her room into a gym with a tanning bed and a stack of Victoria's Secret catalogues. [10] However, Jack is more sympathetic towards Monica than his wife is. Jack refers to Monica as his "little Harmonica," consoles Monica after she breaks up with Richard Burke, and gives Monica his Porche after accidentally her ruining her childhood in a flood.[11] In season 10, episode 18, "The Last One: Part 2" Monica names her son after her father.
Judy Geller
[edit]Unlike Rachel Green and Chandler Bing's parents, who are both divorced, the Gellers remain married at the end of the ten seasons. Season 2, episode 22, "The One with the Two Parties" shows Rachel's parents' inability to be in the same room with each other after their divorce.[12] In contrast, the audience sees Judy and Jack Geller in what appears to be a loving relationship in season 2, episode 16, "The One Where Joey Moves Out".[13]
Rachel Green
[edit]Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) is Jack's daughter's best friend. Jack has known Rachel since she was a teenager as evident from a flashback in season 2, episode 14, "The One with the Prom Video".[14] In season 6, episode 9, "The One Where Ross Got High" Rachel refers to Jack as someone who "walks in while you're changing."[15] When Rachel has Emma in season 8, episode 18, "The One in Massapequa" Jack becomes Emma's paternal grandfather.[16]
Chandler Bing
[edit]Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) is Jack's son Ross' college roommate. Chandler first meets Jack when Ross brings him home for Thanksgiving in 1987 in a flashback in season 6, episode 9, "The One Where Ross Got High".[17] In this episode, Jack goes from hating Chandler to loving Chandler as he learns it was Ross and not Chandler who smoked pot back in college.[18] Chandler also marries Monica in season seven, which makes Chandler Jack's son-in-law.[19]
Richard Burke
[edit]Dr. Richard Burke (Tom Selleck) is Jack's best friend and golf partner. The two become distant in season 2, episode 15, "The One Where Joey Moves Out" when Jack learns that Richard is dating his daughter Monica.[20]
Phoebe Buffay
[edit]Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) lived with Monica Geller before Rachel Green moved in. In season 6, episode 9, "The One Where Ross Got High," Phoebe tells Rachel in her dream Jack Geller saved her from a burning building. Phoebe says Jack "used to be just, you know Jack Geller, Monica and Ross's dad and now he's Jack Geller, dream hunk."[21]
Quotes
[edit]1. Season 1, Episode 2: "There are people, like Ross, who need to shoot for the stars, with his museum and his papers getting published. Other people are satisfied with staying where they are. I'm telling you, these are the people who never get cancer. They're happy with what they have, they're basically content, like... cows."[22]
2. Season 1, Episode 8: "Everyone thinks they know me. Everyone says 'Jack Geller, so predictable.' Maybe after I'm gone, they'll say 'Buried at sea. Huh!'"[23]
3. Season 1, Episode 17: "I wouldn't mind having a piece of this sun-dried tomato business. Five years ago, if someone had said to me, "here's a tomato that looks like a prune."I would have said, "get out of my office!"[24]
4. Season 7, Episode 23: "So, are you his mother or his father?"[25]
5. Season 8, Episode 18: "Son, I had to shave my ears for tonight. You can do this."[25]
Reception
[edit]In 2004, the Seattle Times rated Jack as the second best guest character of the series.[26] In 2014, the online publication Vulture ranked Jack Geller as the number one parent on Friends.[27]
