The Protestant Monastery of St Augustine in Erfurt is a former monastery of the Augustinian hermits in Erfurt, Germany, now used as a conference center. It is also the official home of the provost of Erfurt.
History
[edit]The Augustinian community in Erfurt was probably founded in 1266. It became the largest and most important house of the order in the thirteenth century.[1] Construction of the monastery began in 1277,[2] continuing into the next two centuries. The church nave was built in the fifteenth century with an octagonal tower.[1]
Martin Luther became a monk at the monastery in 1505.[3]
