Dalton Stevens Dalton Stevenson, a resident of Bishopville, SC, is considered a self-taught artist because of a very unique and distinctive “art” of his. Mr. Stevenson was said to have suffered from extreme insomnia, meaning that he was not able to sleep. In the year 1983, when Mr. Stevenson couldn’t sleep, he began idly sewing buttons on a denim suit. Two years and ten months later, after not being able to sleep, he had sewn 16,333 buttons onto that suit, leaving it weighing 16 lbs. After the suit, he moved on to attach 3,005 buttons onto his guitar and 517 buttons onto his shoes, which made a complete outfit. Mr. Dalton’s to sew buttons on a suit in 1983 launched his new identity as the “Button King”. Mr. Stevenson has put buttons on many different things. Some of those things include, but are not limited to: an outhouse, a hearse, a Chevrolet Chevette, a guitar, a piano and two caskets, one of which he will be buried in when he passes away. The hearse has 600,000 buttons while the Chevrolet has 149,000 buttons attached. Being known as the “Button King” has brought Mr. Stevenson what some might call a bit of “fame”. Mr. Stevenson has been featured on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson, “The David Letterman Show” and “Nashville Now” with Ralph Emery. He has even appeared in Star Magazine and on local and national television newscasts. The “Button King” has opened a museum to showcase all of his creations. The museum is located off of Highway 34 between Bishopville and Camden and is open six days a week.
